How much does a non-original engine take away from the value?

I found a 70 for sale with a replacement Kohler engine. It's the correct model, black and has the dipstick below the carb iirc. How much does this actually take away from the collector value? If I buy it, it really wouldn't be to use much. More just to fix up and take to shows. It's a great little machine with no problems that I noticed.
Thanks

I wouldn't worry about it myself, as long as it runs good that's all I care about. If your going to restore it for show you can paint the engine yellow and 99% of people wouldn't even notice.

^^What olds said.^^

Besides, even if it did matter to other people, what's it matter to you? It's your machine, so as long as you like it, that's what counts. :beerchug:

Unless your selling to a die hard collector, and asking extreme top dollar...... It doesn't change the price one bit. Now if its not the correct engine, that's different.

So, is there a difference between an originally equipped Cub with a Kohler and a replacement Kohler, besides the black or yellow paint?

Good! His dipstick comment threw me off. My 127 has it's dipstick somewhat below the carb like he mentioned, but my 122 had its dipstick on the "passenger" side of the engine and up high near the top of the head.

My comment was based on the authorized Factory Replacement engine. Installing any basic model of Kohler (per HP range) may not keep the original value.

I thought anything above a 8 hp had a tube on the right side, newer 10 + motors on the cam cover,no cam cover on a 7hp,8hp.
maybe you have a 10hp?

we need pics

dipstick location was pretty standard till they put syncro balance gears in them.

Original engine is a bonus for me. Replacement is ok as long as it's made for the machine (IE a 12 HP for a 126, 14 HP for a 147, etc) it can always be painted and "camouflaged" to make it look like it was an original.

I was under the impression that (from the 1X8/9 series tractors and older) all the 10 HP engines had the long dipstick on the top of the engine on the S/G side and 12 and 14 HP engines had the dipstick on the cam cover, is this not correct?

Both my 125s and my former 122 had long dipsticks on the S/G side.

All 3 of my 1X2s have the long stick on the S/G side.

I went out and looked today, my 128, 100 w/12 HP engine, 70 w/12 HP engine, 125 and 122 all have the dipstick in the cam cover.

That's all that are here, except a couple of 149's a bunch of "O's" a 129 w/10 HP engine and a 123 w/10 HP engine.

I guess that is at least part of the reason that I thought the 12 HP engines all had the dipstick in the cam cover and not the long stick on the S/G side.

Thanks for setting me straight on the dipstick thing, once again you guys have proven that this old dog can learn something new.

To satisfy my own curiosity, I'll check the others this weekend when I'm there and see what they have.
