782 Starting issue
Hello well the 782 is acting up and I'm a little puzzled. The switch works (I think)
the pto clicked when I turned the key, and the I tried bypassing the brake safety switch and it did nothing. I ran a jumper wire from the battery to the starter and turned the switch and it started instantly and ran fine for 10 minutes and stopped and I tried the switch and it did nothing. I checked the fuses and they were not blown. My question is where else should I check? Thanks for any help. |
I just turned on the PTO to see if the switch was functioning I turned the PTO off to try cranking it.

I use the one 719999 and under

The starter

I need to get some sleep before asking questions, I'm so tired I didn't think about the solenoid
|
So.... you basically jumped the starter? Didn't it crank as soon as the wire touched the starter? ....... Then it ran a bit and died?
|
yes that is what it did, I cranked it and it ran 10 minutes and stopped I turned the switch (without the pto on) and it did nothing, maybe it's the solenoid
|
Check the usual (grease and grime at the solenoid connection) ... you can also try 12V directly to the solenoid terminal and see if that makes it crank

It's an M18 the switch is a little tricky it has to be at a certain point to crank not all the way to the right. That is why I turned the pto switch on to see if I could make the click sound and then I assumed the switch could possibly still function. I'll also check the connections they might need some cleaning.
Thanks guys for all the help on this |
I recently had a very similar problem with my 782. It turned out to be the switch. It was not visible until I pulled it, then it was obvious as one of the terminals was loose - the switch was literally burned up inside.
Good luck with yours, hope you get it resolved easily. --Mike |

We're here to help...... but we need all the information :beerchug: |
I really thought nothing of the switch it has been that way for seven years.

Thanks for the switch suggestion it one of those crappy wiring jobs by previous owner when the engine was replaced. I'm still wondering why it died after running that long
|
Hello well I jumped the 782 off by the solenoid this time and it cranked immediately and ran perfectly this time and I cut the entire yard. I parked the cub and cut off the switch and the cut it back on a few time and it come back on but when I let the engine completely stop it did nothing so I guess the switch finally gave up the ghost.

Hello
Well I bought a new switch for the 782 from cub cadet and replaced the switch that was on it and what I was concerned about happened the ground for the amp gauge and the wire that was supposed to go to the c terminal on the pto started burning a few moments after I connected the battery and could not get the a terminal off before they completely burned all the insulation off the wires. ( Never again will I have 3/4 inch bolts on a battery terminal again!) The wire that was supposed to go to the negative side of the amp gauge was used as a ground and attached to the same post as the hour meter was for the wiring harness holder this entire wire burned the insulation off. The wire going to the c terminal of the pto switch only burned up to a splice in the line done by a previous owner. May have found the mystery to why the tractor wasn't able to charge the wire going to the B terminal of the voltage regulator wasn't even connected. I'm not sure if the switch is toast it may be , I can turn the switch and get nothing and then turn on the pto switch and hear the click from the safety switch. I guess I could borrow the switch of the 982 but I don't know. I noticed the switch has the light switch feature that the old on did not it had a light switch on the pedestal but the hole for the light had a flat side like it was from the factory. Roland thanks for the diagrams once again otherwise this would be worse than it is. |
Well... you definitely have a short. One note. The amp gauge isn't grounded. That may be the problem. One side of the amp gauge is connected to battery positive, and the other to the charging circuit. NOT ground. Sounds like you have some wiring to fix :BangPC: PO mods.... sigh. :beer2:

Sorry the ground was on the hour meter not the amp meter

Hello
Oh the previous owner I hope he doesn't do wiring on garden tractors for a living. Man I considered another wiring harness but I bought a new circuit tester and traced the wires, tagged them on both ends and the studied and studied etc......... several different wiring diagrams tried they're ways and finally got the the mower to turn over. The wires were really a mess the lights were moved off the key and the fuse and had on a toggle switch and they ran the p t o wires through both the fuses and a ground was run off the m terminal of the ignition switch . The engine on the 782 has been replaced with an M18 so it made it necessary to study the M18 wiring diagrams also. I still have the ground to kill wire from the ignition module that did not work when wired to the switch so I ran a kill switch from where the diagram said the wire went until I figure out how to correct it. But I'm glad to have it running all is correctly functioning except for the kill switch.:Pray: |
