project "new '62 CCO"

1 Attachment(s)
Well with the temporary layoffs they just did at work I have finally got around to a few projects. I finally got started on my o that has been tore down in my shed for the last three months I've got 2 coats of school bus yellow on the frame and rearend now have had the entire rearend gone through and cleaned up got all the rust pits in the frame smoothed out. This is going to be a very long restoration as time and funds allow I will be replacing EVERY wear part on this my goal is to have a "brand new 1962" cub original with fenders 3 point spring assist and hopefully headlights and a grote. I still have a few more coats to go on before.I am done with these parts but I figure I might as well start a thread as I've been working on the frame for a week now to get it smoothed out. Here is the only pic I have of my progress as I forgot to take any during prep and primer ill be adding more as time goes on

Here's a pic of it before the teardown. Looks a lot better in the pic then it really was. The lo made a attempt at repainting but cut a lot of.corners

zippy1 04-17-2013 12:07 AM

Glad you're getting back on to you project:beerchug:
Good luck, we'll be watching for sure.

Cubcrazy 04-17-2013 06:18 AM

Looking good!
It's going to look great when you are done!

ihcc104 04-17-2013 09:49 AM

Sorry to hear you had a temp lay-off, but at least your getting around to projects! Keep up the good work! Nice progress!! :beerchug::biggrin2:

Methos 04-17-2013 10:42 AM

Sorry about the temp layoff. Your approaching this with the right mindset. If it needs it done do it.:beerchug: It will pay off in the long run reward you with many years of service.

cubby102 04-17-2013 11:40 AM

Thanks guys I want to take this to shows as well as use it so even if it dosnt need it it is getting done. My budget is lower but that just means it will be a slower process. How hard is it to get clutch parts. I've noticed the o clutch is quite a bit different then the narrow.frames I'm still studying it.trying to figure it out

Whats wrong with the clutch? You are right they are way different than NF's, but are VERY simplistic... not much to go wrong.... :bigthink: :beerchug:

The bearing is a little wore out. The po replaced the friction disk in it and it.still looks new so I'm just going to clean that up just the bearing looks a little wore and would prefure to change it out anyway. Like I said my goal is.to swap any wear item so that I essentially have a brand new.machine when done.

Ah, yes the bearing. Id just pick it up from CC directly. CCO Clutch
They usually don't have too bad prices surprisingly for parts like bearings. :beerchug: Good luck with the resto!

cubby102 04-17-2013 05:09 PM

Thanks ill start looking into it. I also need to order the bushing and seals for the axle tubes. Has anybody figured out a bearing for these instead of thebushing. Been raining all day and its really slowing down the drying process of the paint so I need to figure a way to keep buisy

cubfixer 04-17-2013 07:55 PM

Even temp layoff's can have a silver lining (well, maybe a copper-plated lining). I have used mine for working on projects that were just too time-consuming during regular work hours. The only problem is reduced pay. Good job on your restore! Looking nice!

Got a few things wire wheeled and some primer laid I'm really wishing I could find the camera I have all the pics of dissassembly on because this is a giant puzzle lol. What I can't get with the wire wheel on the bench or drill I will be sand blasting. Will wait to paint all the small parts till they are all primed

cubby102 04-18-2013 04:32 PM

Yea my daughter does that as well I'm sure shed be doing it to the original if it were on all fours. She loves sitting on the mustang acting like she's driving

cubby102 04-18-2013 04:43 PM

Well guys did.a.little more.stripping and priming.tonight.and.decided.to pull the steering column apart. It had no slop but was very.difficult to turn. And I found out why. I've noticed these columns or at least this one didn't have the bearings with the plastic holders... Well my "holder" is a little messed up and wasn't acting like a bearing at all. Even had to use the rubber mallet with quite a bit of force to get everything apart. Any ideas on getting a complete overhaul kit for this column or will I be better off getting a new steering setup

I believe eBay has a few of the kits. Very nice so-far, and I look forward to seeing your's done. I have a '61 Im working on.

cubby102 04-19-2013 06:16 AM

Thanks. It will be a little while before its done. With the layoff I gotta watch my penny's pretty close and I'm running out of things.to do that don't cost a.whole lot. Got about 80 left to put into the rearend. Looks like around 100 to do the steering column. Then I need bushings for the front wheels have to rebuild the k161 (again) it has developed a knock which I'm affraid is my own fault. Pretty much all I can do right now is strip and paint.

By the way as far as the foam gasket for the steering goes has anyone had any luck making there own. If so how did it turn out. I'm trying to save myself some coin here and as far as the bearings go in the column it looks to be the same as the 123s bearings for replacements which I have a spare column with good bearings I can rob parts for. Cub is wanting 54 dollars for that foam gasket I can't justify spending that right now

Nothing like having them in the shop with you.:beerchug:

Methos 04-19-2013 11:11 AM

This is a copy of what I emailed to a fellow forum member so I'm just going to cut and paste the info.:beerchug:

This info is for Originals and some parts would be needed to changed for other Ross columns.
The cam follower is to long so we need to regrind your old ones. Easy as pie! Chuck them in a 1/2 drill spin them while they grind and they will come out prefect every time! Trying to locate a source for the .3125 steel balls in bulk. Each colum needs 16 balls. This is the cheapest place I can find them at.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Cam-Follower...item4ac09833fc

In case you have a broken or dented bearing cup you'll need two of these per column.
Part number IH-379405 R1 and one IH-376478-R91

cubby102 04-19-2013 04:18 PM

Thanks methos that helps quote a bit. I see where the add says 16 and so do you so I'm going with that as I followed your restoration thread. Great job by the way. But when I opened mine up it had 20 in it. 10 in each cup. Just wondering what would be up

cubby102 04-20-2013 04:17 AM

Had some good bearing out of a different steering box I had laying around so I can get the column back together just need to make a gasket. Going to sandblast some parts in the am

Grampie 04-20-2013 05:18 AM

Nothing like havin good used parts on hand to keep the cost down! :biggrin2:

Got a few more parts on the original tonight then I cut my finger pretty bad while cleaning parts in diesel fuel of all things so its pretty sore right now not bad enough for stitches but seen plenty of the red stuff so I'm callin it a night for now. Got my spare clutch in it for now untill I can get the other one rebuilt at a later time I need to make a gasket so I can bolt the shifter down and got first couple coats put on the left axle... Good enough for now I suppose

Cubcrazy 04-21-2013 07:09 AM

Looking good and sorry about the finger!

ACecil 04-21-2013 08:51 AM

Good job! Hope your finger heals quickly.

Well said men!

cubby102 04-21-2013 02:27 PM

Lol thanks guys like I.said.it isn't that bad it was just amplified by the diesel fuel as I didnt know it was cut really untill the sting started. It's all good though ky daughter went and got one of her Dora the explorer bandaids and kissed it better for me... Lmao how does a 3 year old make a grown man wear Dora bandaids? Anyway I plan on getting a few things blasted today as long as the weather holds out on me

The same way I have worn Little Mermaid Band Aids and a Hello Kitty temporary tatoo... Even some sparkly finger nail polish. Just don't forget to take the polish off before you get to work. Don't ask me how I know this.
