149 trans service

I want to service the fluid in the trans of my 149. I also want take the rear cover off to check for moisture and junk build up. My questions are 1 I don't see a drain so the cover has to come off any way correct? And 2. Has anybody had luck reusing the gasket? They seem pretty expensive for a gasket to me. How about RTV or silicone gasket maker? Any thought or opinions are welcome. Thanks, Mark

The rear cover does have to come off for the fluid to be drained. Take out the lower bolts first in an attempt to deflect the fluid down instead of all over the place.

Do not reuse the gasket. Get a new one. You'll be happier that way.

What Dan said. You can go to an auto parts store and buy some gasket paper and make the cover gasket. I did that for my 71 because I didn't want to wait for the dealer to get one for me. So far no leaks.

Ok, thanks guys. I ordered a new gasket. 14.00 plus 9.00 shipping. I have tried gasket paper before and haven't had much luck. Already enough leaks now!! Guess I just needed a push to do the right thing. thanks for the input. Mark

Mark, there is a drain plug underneath. If you can't find it, I can post a pic if you want.

i'm going to take the cover off but I would like a pic of the drain plug if you could post it anyway. Thanks, Mark

I have one on my 128 also. Lower right front corner if I am not mistaken. You have to look for it. Mine was covered in old dirt and chaff.

Me too, never found one on my 149 or 169 :biggrin2:

I've never seen a drain plug on the rear of a cadet.

The hydro's may not have them. I don't have one here to compare.

Here you go:

Well snap wished my 149 and 169 had one!!!

I've never had a hydro with a drain plug. Only the gear drives had one.

Thanks for posting the pics Dwayne. That's the plug i was thinking of, on my gear drive tractor. I figured the plug on the hydro's ( part # IH 379277-C1) would be removable, since the plug on a gear drive that holds 7 pints of hytran is removable. A hydro holds 14 pints, seems like that would be the tranny you'd put a removable plug on. Here's a link to pics of a hydro tranny with plug removed.

I believe that " plug hole " is where the hydro tube threads in, on the pics above
