Quietline repower
Has anyone done a quietline repower that keeps the tins and ideally the front pto?
|
I sent a PM. Thanks , Darrell

What are you thinking in terms of a repower, a twin cylinder or something else?
Sounds like an interesting thread. Good luck, Bill |
Not a single cyl. Something 25 hp or less to stay within the hydro design limit.
|
i am also interested in doing the same thing. I'm building a quietline to be on snow thrower duty and the extra hp could be handy once in a while.
|
I am wanting to use mine as a mini tractor, and I know I have a rebuild coming up (pretty severe oil leak/ oil burning) I am just looking to see if anyone has done any of the legwork I would have to if I were to repower with more power. Probably the biggest reason for wanting a repower is to kill as much of the vibration as possible.

Just my 2 cents. Seems a guy could do all of the noise isolation and get a good rebuild for a whole lot less bread than stuffing a non stock engine into a Quietline. I would think it would be tough to find a V-twin that would fit in the engine bay with side panels as is. That series of tractors was designed with a Kohler single in mind. Just think of the Cub Cadets that proceeded the Quietlines. Any of the twins had a larger hood and engine bay.
I do not know if this is even a consideration but, a K-361 is an 18hp single that would fit with minor hood modification at most if the overhead valves stick up too high. Get a new set of Iso Mounts and a good K-361 and you would have something. My 1450 was a rattler when I bought it. After some casual and enjoyable fiddling it purrs now. |
You nailed it bushman.:beerchug:

I dont feel that the k-341 makes too much noise, I like the look of the quietline with the side panels on. I like stock stuff, but I also like things nicely modified with a "factory" appearance. In this case, I would ideally like the look of the quietline but with 20+hp, and starting with less vibration than the k series. I replaced the iso mounts and did the cradle mod on my 1650 and it made a tremendous difference from how i received it, but the engine now needs a rebuild. I am exploring options and kicking tires. just want to see if someone else has done it and how.

These guys sell a re-power kit but the side tins won't fit and the fuel tank is also an issue.

The vanguards are awesome engines and thats a pretty cool conversion but I'd hate to see the sides go away on the QL. Personal preference though.
|
I had seen the smallenginewarehouse conversions, but you cannot keep the tins without some extensive metal forming. I really would like to keep the tins.
|
Anyone else?
|
I'm with you on keeping it stock. I have a 1650, too, and if faced with engine issues, I'd definitely rebuild it and put it back in. It will last another 40 years.
Now, has anybody done a red and white QL? That might look neat. |
I am all about the Kohlers for their durability, and that is most likely what I will end up doing. It just seemed like a cool idea, and I hadnt seen a picture of it already done by someone.
|
Im working on my 1250, rebuld and restore. Im painting it red and white, red frame, hood, nose, dash mostly everything, The rims will be white.
|
A red and white cub would look great! I can't find the pic now but saw a blue and white one online that looked sharp!
|
Paint
It don't matter what color, All new paint look's good! :biggrin2:

Rebuild it and do some great valve work, mill the head and you
Should get 20 hp. Muffler improvement is needed. Mine is a tank with a fresh engine. |

I know kirk muffler mod- he gutted it and just put fg/mesh to get some dampening. I'm thinking of doing more after looking at Donaldson mufflers. I think I can get some 1.5 or 1.375 inch perforated pipe and do several chambers.
You want expansion, dampening, and reflection to be quite. Yes, I think you can mill the head 050 inch and still be reliable. The most gains will be with good valve work. I ground my intake at 30 degree angle. You want a 3-angle with the valve contact to be on the outer most part of the seat. Ie, make it effectively large. Then you can taper and swirl polish the valves. The machinist I used did a lot of Cart engines.. thought it was a bit odd with my requests, but humored me. With a rebuild it should run really nice. I have mixed feelings about putting a cheater cam in them- I know I run mine at 3600 rpm all the time and it might work great- don't know. Michael |
So I can safely assume that no one has done or knows of a REPOWER with a DIFFERENT ENGINE with MORE THAN ONE CYLINDER that allows you to KEEP THE SIDE PANELS ON.
