is there anything I should look for this is my first 82 and I don't know much

I just got one this past summer and I am ignorant about them. I assume that you are looking for an IH one (earlier model). They would be red and the earlier models of them had red rearends and the later models had black rearends. The 782's had a hydraulic lift on them, which is very helpful on lifting implements (snow blowers, tillers, etc.) and some of them had dual hydraulics on them (port on the front, too)--more exclusive to the diesel ones, I believe and those would be marked as 782D. I missed a lot.....sorry and forgive me if I have given you any incorrect information, but that is what I believe to be true. Someone else please come to my rescue and provide more advice for our member....

i have the early model , with hydro lift

One of the biggest things is if it has a series 1 kt17 in it, as they are known for having bad lubrication, especially on hills. Here are some serial numbers:

Series I were installed in Chassis Serial Numbers below 726124
Series II were installed in Chassis Serial Numbers above 726125

Other than that they don't have much that goes wrong other than the rag joints and a few other things. Got any pictures?

You could add a rear lift to it.

The series 2 is a good engine, As it has full pressure lubrication. Check the rag joints and replace if needed, change the oil and filters and you should be good to go.Great options are ag tires and weights, they make a world of difference with traction, and depends on what you want to do a cat.0 three point.

Sort of. The lift bar and the way the yoke mounts are different for the x82 series. The lift bar on a 782 is straight and the yoke mounts with frankenstein bolts instead of a bar. Also if you have the aluminum rear end, you would need a special lower bracket.

Alan all of my tractors are for sale. It's just that they all have a little reason why I want to keep them, so you just have to have enough cash to overcome that.

482- hard to find
582- Repowered with a mag18 and my most reliable tractor
682- low serial number
782- I Rebuilt it and had it completely powder coated
982- Well.... It has all options. Very hard to find one.

Let's get this back on topic.

As far as mods, there really aren't much. In my opinion, the 782 was the best designed tractor they built! The only mods I know of would be to add a washer to the trunnion spring to stiffen it up a little bit. It helps keep the transmission at a constant speed. Other than that, they are pretty much the perfect garden tractor. Now, I think of it, power steering would be a awesome upgrade but a bit pricey. Plus it takes some modification to make it work. Or you could find a steering column out of a 1810/1811/1806. The 782 came with what we call a 2 turn column. Basically it take 2 turns of the column to go from one side to the other. The 18xx tractors had a 3 turn column making it easier to steer. Other than that, the 782 was perfect.
