What can I get/do with my Original?

Now that I've got my Orig running decent, I'm getting bored just riding it around in circles :) I've got a deck, but the front edge is ate out on one side so... I was wondering what all is out there I can do with this thing so I can have an "excuse" to get it out more. My friend said it looks like you could put a rear PTO on it, is that possible/practical? I do have a pull cart from my GT2544, but other than that...

eastonct124 10-04-2009 07:58 PM

personally, I love restoring things to the "N"th degree. I just found an original sitting in a lot with a bunch of junk, gotta stop by and make him an offer.
Everyone here in CT. thinks that they're junk is worth alot because they saw one on the internet, or on tv sell for big bucks.
To me it's worth it, because Im passionate about antiques...so I guess going further with yours depends on personal preference.

Put your Orginal to work.
This isn't an Orginal....it is a 70 that I just finish. I took it to a plow day and pulled a plow:
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...Dick/UD212.jpg
70 has only 5 hours on it when it went to a plow day. I was impress on how well it pulled my 10 inch Brinly plow.

gcbailey 10-04-2009 09:52 PM

my problem is I don't have anywhere level enough to plow on my property. My grandpa keeps a 2 acre garden, but the Kub B takes care of it for now.

Don't get me wrong, I love to just go over everything in the garage over and over. There are still things I need to get tweaked, I just want an excuse to say I actually "need" to use it :) I'd like to find an old sweeper and a blade. The blade would be great, but I just don't know what all is out there for an original...

Randy Littrell 10-04-2009 10:46 PM

Well, I use my original for spraying weeds, pulling a roller, pulling a drag for the driveway, spring tooth, pulling the kids around in the wagon and a bunch of other stuff. I think cubs are as handy as a shirt with 2 pockets!

Lol randy, shirt with two pockets. Is that kinda like happier than a tornado in a trailer park!!

There are quite a few attachments you can use, and a lot of options you can add. Hydraulic lift, blade, plow, disc, trailer, loader, etc,......They did have a rear PTO, I'd love, love one just for cool factor, lol. But there was only a couple things it would run as it goes in a different direction than all other PTO driven equipment!

thanks for the suggestions... I've saw the guy with the danco loader on here... I would be in heaven with that, wouldn't have much of a yard left. I think my biggest problem is there is no one in southern WV southwest VA that has any old stuff. I've been told that everything listed above is specific to an original, stuff from a 70/100 won't work. Is that true? Does anyone have any sources for Original attachments? I can't really pick anything up, due to lack of truck...

gcbailey,
Does anyone have any sources for Original attachments?

I think you will have to look everywhere you can and have a fat check book.:biggrin2.gif:

Gcbailey, If you look around, you should be able to find some attachemnts. it seem that PA is a super hot spot for anything CUB Cadet and I wouldn't think it would be that far from you. I would start by checking craigslist and e-bay or even some of the other Cub Cadet websites. I would post some links to them, but I found the hard way that this site doesn't allow you to even mention the names of them. Have fun in your quest. It may even make what you have more valuable to you.

gcbailey,

I have a suggestion, it won't get you a lot more seat time but personally I think it sounds like a fun project.

Find yourself an old generator (one that makes 110 or 220V) build a platform that will attach to the front of your Original, then build a shaft system to run the generator off the front of the crankshaft. Pawn shops are good sources for cheap used generators you can get one pretty cheap if the engine on it won't start or runs poorly.

Being that it is fall you could get yourself a lawn sweeper and clean up leaves around the neighborhood, and perhaps a nice core aerator to do your friends and neighbors yards with. It might just turn into a nice part time job...

I'm definitely looking at a de-thatcher and aerator. The generator does sound cool. My grandpa has a really old monty wards 2000W that is shot. Like I said I have a deck, but I believe it's shot. I'll try to take a few pics and see if you all think it's worth re-doing.

Clearanced items...

I was at a TSC store this past weekend and saw aerators, rollers, carts, sprayers, etc. on clearance and all would work nicely on the back of an original. I just bought a '62 original last week myself and really appreciate how fine of a machine it really is.....if the bracket for the bolts to the rear transmission didn't need to be welded (a common problem with the originals). If you want to have a little extra fun and have some more seat time, you could get a single disc plow and plow up your neighbors' yards if your isn't level enough. When they get upset and start yelling at you, just grin from ear to ear, wave to them and tell them that you didn't think your cub could do it, but it did!!!:biggrin2.gif:..........Uh, on second thought:bigthink:, maybe you better not do that, but it would be funny to see the look on their faces!! Hopefully you can pick up some attachments at a fair price and start enjoying that great ride!!!

that's a good idea... my neighbors wouldn't have back yard if it wasn't for me. I got bored one summer and cleared .75 acres off their back lot by hand, just my husqvarna 350 and me... I got my dad a winters worth of wood (he has an outdoor stove keeps year round). They are great people and would probably let me do it :)

gcbailey 10-08-2009 07:33 PM

Well I got me a couple of things today... I found a newer dethatcher for $5.00 in the trading journal. The guy wanted me to haul off the Murray it came with too... I also went to sears and they had a 36" spike aerator down to $70. Doesn't look the best in the world, but I figured $70 ain't too bad. My problem is there just isn't too much of a market for old stuff around here. I would have to go down towards Bristol VA from the looks of anything on craigslist or ebay...

original,things to do

If you really want to have some fun,buy another cadet and then restore yours! I have been about 3 yrs. gathering parts and accessories for my original and this will be my winter project. So far it is painted ,ready to be reassembled. I have been fortunate to find: light kit,3 point lift.wheel weights, fenders etc. sometimes the hunt is more fun than the capture. The most important thing to me is have fun with your project. This one was built in May of 1961. Ihave a trading buddy whose original s/n is 18 numbers newer than mine. Again, have fun with it. Waiting to be restored: another original,a72,a73,a spirit of 76 and what ever my next one will be. Wawcub47

And you can hook up your cart and drive down the road and pick up all the trash along the road. Works good for seat time.

Boy this is an old one I forgot about... :)

I wish I would have taken some pics, but the 'O' has been doing some serious cart duty. When I was helping my dad put up a new chain link fence we put all the tools, line/terminal post, concrete, whatever in the cart and the 'O' pulled it around without even flinching. I think at one time we had 8/80lb bags of quickrete along with some other stuff. It was pretty cool. The neighbor across the street had never saw anything like it. He was amazed at the "midget tractor" as he called it. Good stuff.....

johncub7172 07-19-2010 11:07 PM

Yea, I hear ya on the cart duty. But I do take the outfit with a pole/nail combo and gather trash...hope I was not sounding like a smart butt. Not much work for the old wheelbarrel except between the rows of the garden.I like these old threads, they are here for something, right!

Things to do with CubCadet

Hey Guys;

I find all sorts of things to do with my 100, almost everyday.
A few of these would be, plow the garden, disc the garden, cultivate, use my cart for just about everything, hual fire wood, haul things to the compost pile, haul compost out to the garden.
Last year at CubOrama, I saw a guy running an ice cream freezer off of the PTO, I can't wait to get one of those set up.

Just afew ideas;
Cadet Farmer

Oh no, that never crossed my mind.... When I started this thread back when I was just looking for ANYTHING to use the 'O' for besides joy rides. :) I think I mentioned it in this thread, but I've got a deck for it, but most of the front leading edge is ate away, so there goes that... I bought the 'O' without knowing anything about IH Cubs so at the time I didn't realize that all of the attachments for the Original were made just for the Original...

Not looking to start a war or anything but I don't know that this is exactly true, is it?

Without going back and looking stuff up, I know that there were several attachments (some of which would probably be of no real use (with the exception of the cool factor) to an average homeowner) that were exclusive to the Original, but for the most part, anything that can attach to the 3 point or a sleeve hitch adapter can be used on any IH built Cub Cadet.

"Original only" attachments do come up for sale periodically, if I'm not mistaken there was a front blade on epay some time ago that didn't get a bid (don't remember where it was, but I think it was all there and not in too bad of shape). I try to search epay every week or so, for "Cub Cadet Original" and once in awhile there is something cool on there and the prices aren't always astronomical.

gcbailey 07-20-2010 10:15 AM

You all are much smarter than me on this stuff. I know attachments like a plow or anything that will attach to a 3 point would work on an original, but the Original used a 3 point unique to itself, right? A 3 point from a 70/100 would not work on an Original? That's what I meant to get at.

I guess I should have clarified that statement:
"I didn't realize that all of the attachments for the Original were made just for the Original..."

I have been told that a blade for an Original is different than those from any other narrow frame due to the way it attaches. The blade itself is the same, but the mount is different. Also, isn't the square 38" deck on the Original unique to it also?

bsyphrit 07-20-2010 03:03 PM

do not know if the blades are different but i do know on the O the blades on the deck are timed with a cogged belt so they do not hit each other.
glad they quickly got away from that design.

Yosemite Sam 07-20-2010 03:41 PM

gcbailey,

You are correct, the majority of the parts for a 3 point hitch on an Original are exclusive to an Original and they are spendy as "heck".

I don't have a front blade for an Original but I don't believe that any of the parts for one will fit from a different model.

IH did make an adapter package that would allow an Original deck to be mounted on a 70/100 and they also made a kit that would allow a cast iron end deck to be used on an Original. But once again those are hard to find and pricey as well.

Getting back to the 3 point; yes, you're pretty-much out of luck without it (I'm sorry, I didn't realize you don't have one) and they also go for BIG BUCKS, you could probably buy a whole different tractor for what you'd pay for one.

Keep the faith, save your money and search hard are about the only options for getting yourself a 3 point.

Good Luck
