Someone told me I should put a new governor on. They didn’t really explain why. Should I? Why?

Looking forward to the answers you get . Is the governor assembly prone to failure?

One word, insurance.
At old age, they are prone to failure.

Got it, much like their owner operator - me!

I knew of the discussions on balance gears, but not of the governor assy.

Thanks ...and I appreciated the discussion on honing/ Ring ridge, etc. Great post.

Okay, thanks for letting me know.

I’m leaning towards getting it bored. Although I can’t afford to right now and wasn’t expecting to need to have it bored. This project is very sadly on pause. I’d rather sadly wait until I can afford to bore, rather than throw it together as is and something go wrong.

You will need to get the block checked out and measured first, before you order a rebuild kit that way you will know just what size piston and rod to get.

I ordered a standard size rebuild kit from isavetractors which is super high quality. A lot of things could still be used. Just gotta trade for a different piston/rings and rod…

Called a local ish shop and they estimated $65 to bore my motor. Should I have them cross hatch it also if they offer that? I know many folks weren’t impressed with our cross hatching job…

Yes! You should also ask about valve seats and crank journal as well as any other technical issues.
