Ok, so after just a few minuets in the shop tonight I slammed my thumb squarely with a hammer, blood everywhere:BlahBlah:. Needless to say I didn't get much done, but I DID take some pictures.

Like ironman said... you can run just about any oil you want.. and you will get tons of different opinions on that.. but IH spec for a gear drive is either SAE 30 motor oil or Hytran if you want the factory's opinion..
In south GA we have always run 90 wt gear oil.. but it rarely gets cold here...:biggrin2: Sorry you banged your finger!!:bash2: that makes me hurt thinking about it!:beerchug: |

Despite my injured hand, I manged to paint the bulkhead (or whatever you want to call it), and I finally got all the new hardware for the front end so I put that on as well.

Just a little update:
I ordered a decal set for a 100 so the colors will be red not blue, I will probably not be applying the numbers though since it is not a 100. I ordered new rear tires, I went with 23x10.5 Tru Powers, delivered for $185 for the pair. I thought that was pretty good. I mounted my 4x8 front tires on the wide rims that came with the WF axle. They look a little goofy, but the look is growing on me. I also should be hearing back from the machine shop on the engine soon, it should be done this week The new wiring harness I ordered from Mike should be here today or tomorrow. On top of all that in case I didn't have enough to do, I started fabricating a dozer blade so I can push a little dirt around once its all done. It will be power up and down via dual 12v actuators like I have on the rear. The lifting frame and blade will disconnect from the tractor completely, kind of like a minute mount snow plow. That way when I am not using it there will be no ugly frame work hanging off the front of the tractor. The blade itself is a no name snow plow blade so I didn't feel bad chopping it up a bit. I will post some pictures of it later, it is still in the early stages of design. |

As promised I have more pics :biggrin2:
Here is the frame to which I will attach the actuators and blade for the dozer blade I am building, don't look too hard at the welds, they are rather embarrassing... my welder struggles with 1/4"+. The upper cross-member will hold the top end of the actuators and the lower will have pivots for the blade. To remove the entire assembly, I will just have to remove the upper and lower through pins and unplug the actuators. Attachment 90496 Attachment 90498 Attachment 90499 Attachment 90500 I also added a brace for the factory frame bracket, I felt it would be sturdier if some of the stress was transferred back further in the frame. Attachment 90501 Ok back to the boring stuff. I noticed while prepping the rear rims, that I have two different rims!! The main differences are the bead seat shape, and the stem size... anyone know which is factory? I believe the one on the right with the flat bead seat is supposed to be used with a tube...? Attachment 90502 Attachment 90503 I threw the bulkhead on only to realize I will need to remove it to put the dash decal on:Forgot: but it looked so good I left it on :biggrin2: Attachment 90504 |
Nice looking project Mike. It was nice to meet you a while back. Glad the axle is working out for you. When you get done with that I have a 70 roller you need. LOL:beerchug:

Been a little while since I last posted here; I have been taking care of some other projects for a few days, so I didn't get much "cub time" as you all call it.
A bunch of parts arrived for the cub, so I felt the urge to begin work on that again. Started to put the clutch together tonight, I am going with a red spring to get a little more bite. I found the friction plates to be quite pitted and rough, probably should be replaced but I decided to try to dress them up a little instead. I don't have any fancy expensive equipment, so using the tools I have I came up with a way to resurface the plates. I ran a 5/8 bolt through the center and chucked it up in my drill press. Clamped down some sand paper and away we went; sure glad I got the model with the 5/8 chuck. Now I know this is not the proper way to do this, and it isn't prefect, but it seemed to work quite well, and lets face it this is not a Lamborghini :biggrin2: Attachment 90662 Attachment 90663 Attachment 90664 Attachment 90665 I also recieved the decals I ordered, so I put the dash sticker on so I could bolt that down... Now I'm no expert, but it think it looks pretty good. :beerchug: Attachment 90666 |
Looks very good Mike. That disk should work fine as long as you back off on the 8,000 RPM bang shifts.

You want to be on the step when you hit the patch of Bermuda....

Make sure you lay a straight edge across that clutch plate to know its true. They tend to flex over the years and bow so the clutch disk only contacts a small part of it. I have thought of making a jig to press them back flat before dressing them up.

The 122 is coming along. I got the rear wheels painted and the tires mounted and filled with 50# of (used) antifreeze each. Contrary to popular opinion, and true to my nature I went with red for the wheels and I am happy with my choice. I purchased the 10.5 tires instead of the 8.5 and I can't say strongly enough how well I like the look!! we will see about performance as time goes on. The clutch is fully installed, and I also got the dash wiring all hooked up... you can see the two polarity reversing toggle switches I installed to control the front and rear lifts. One of these day's the machine shop will be done with the engine  it has been there three weeks and last I knew they hadn't even started it yet :bash2:

Little update: front wheels are on. I mounted the narrow tires on the wide rims, looks a little goofy but that is how it is gonna be for now... maybe someday I will get a set of v61's. Got a newer style steering wheel installed, I prefer the look and feel of them to the original 122 wheel. Been doing some fab work on the front blade, I am solid mounting it with no angle option. I am thinking this will work better for pushing loose dirt and gravel and such at low speeds of course since I am forgoing the spring trip mechanism.

Well winter is about done in upstate NY and so is my project. I have no idea how many hours I have invested and I would hate to tally the bills lol, but I am happy with the outcome and I am looking forward to many years of use. In my opinion IH should have stuck with red for the cub cadet line, the yellow and white just doesn't seem to do them justice. Anyway, enjoy the pics, I threw one in of what it looked like before.

Looking good!
Let's see some videos of the lifts in action. You really made that look new again Take a bow! John |
Nice!:drool2::ThumbsUp: I agree the red is nicer than the yellow and white.

Turned out rather nice looking. Get some good "glamour" shots before you get it all dirty. Have fun using it.

Nice looking tractor!:beerchug:

I'm partial to the yellow and white colors, but everyone should have at least one red Cub! Congrats on the build, looks fabulous!

I agree with you. I got the 782D given that inclusiveness is all the rage these days :bs: |
That came out great! I agree that the Cub Cadets should have been red all along.
|
Tractor turned out very nice. I voted for the white wheels, but you did right. Red and silver looks awesome. How about some closeup shots of the exhaust stack and brace ? Neat idea on the clutch plates also. Beefed up clutch pivot is a nice touch as well. Great job.

The look is what make it unique. Nice job.
