Default 2000 series cub cadet not firing?

My cub cadet was running fine and it started to sound like it was running out of gas and quit. I discovered I had no fire at the plug tip. Now I had just put in a new plug for the start of the new mowing season a day earlier. I've narrowed it down to what I think is the coil or the black box that's wired to the coil that mounts on the outside of the motor and close to it. I have also noticed that the one relay closest to the coil isn't clicking either. However I do know the relay is good. What's everyone's thoughts on what my problem could be or what I should do to next? Thanks

Welcome to the forum!

How about we start with what model you are working on.... "2000 series" is a little vague.

Yep we need the model number of the tractor. Reading your post it looks like you have a single cylinder engine. Cub used a couple different engines Kohler and Onan so we need to know what you have.

My apology guys. It's a 2166 model with a 16 horse Kohler engine. Thanks.

Your engine has the infamous SAM ignition. That's the black box mounted on the out side of the blower housing. Here is a link to the service manual for the engine.

This link will take you to a list of Cub electrical diagrams, click on 2000 series then click on 2166 and you will get the diagram for your tractor.

Default SAM

I can help with a fix for the ignition system. It involves removal of the SAM and replacement of the coil. I have done it to my 2166 and it works. If you search this site, there is an older thread that deals with this subject. I'll post this evening with a Kohler part number and some instructions.

Lightbulb SAM Removal

I lifted this from an old post. It works. The white wire will be your "kill wire". The new coil will have only 1 terminal on it.
The plug wire is just long enough to work. You'll want to take a piece of 1/4" fuel line and split it. Put it over the tin to protect the plug wire.

This is the coil that I used. Less than $30.
Kohler P/N 20 584 03-S.
It fits a 20hp Kohler Courage.
I bought my coil off of Amazon.

Sorry for the late reply......Been doing something I dont care for, Push mowing all my yards. lol This is great news, but I have a question? I dont have a white wire going to my existing coil. I have a yellow, brown and black for the ground on the side of the coil and what do I do with the remaining wires from the SAM box ? Thanks.

If you are converting to the regular mag that only has 1 wire to kill the engine you will be connecting the kill terminal on the mag to the black wire that was going into the SAM box. The red wire that went into the SAM box is 12 volts so you'll need to make sure it is terminated so that it can't short out.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
