Default Where is Serial Number to be found on 3240

Did a cursory search, but at work so can't do too much surfin

Can anyone help me with the location of the tractor serial number on a cub cadet 3240?

Also, location of serial number for transmission?

Local shop said maybe they have a Series 3000 hydro transmission I could use for my failed one in my 3250 and I am trying to determine if the 3000 transmission is a valid replacement. Dude at shop said he needs those numbers off my tractor to find out.

In a google search, it said it should be under the seat, but no joy there

Any help is appreciated.

Can't say for sure on your tractor but on a 2160 or 2165 it's on the left frame rail near the engine. On some of the newer stuff it's only a crappy printed sticker that that tends to come off with a pressure washer.

On the 3000 series it should be on the right side of the frame at about mid way from the floor board to the front axle.

Cub changed the design of the rears around November of 2000. Yours is a 2001 so it will have the cast iron rear, locking differential and single rear brake disc. I'm thinking anything with the cast rear should work. The other rear they used was aluminum and some had diff lock and some didn't depending on the model. This rear will not work because it uses twin disc brakes on the axles.

Did your differential lock fail and brake the cast iron housing?

That is exactly what happened

Thanks for the good info, can't wait to get home and check for serial number.

I think Series 3000 tractors were prior to 2000, which means the transmission wouldn't work sounds like. That is very disappointing.

I just can't bring myself to pay another $1500 for a new transmission, would love to find one used.

Thanks again.

The 3000 series were built from 1998 to around 2005...I think. The 3240 was built in 2001, it is the 40th anniversary tractor. See if you can post some pictures up on here and maybe what you have can be repaired. If not, give Rich Patton a call and maybe he can help you out. There are several other models that had the same rear so maybe the dealer can help.

Thumper FWIW, I Just did a similar swap last winter in my 3206.
It is a 2000 model year.

Mine had the early 3000 series aluminum rear end, and it had the busted diff lock, as well as bad wheel bearings and scored axle shafts.

Those were notoriously bad designs.
MTD supposedly upgraded to the good cast iron rear end around late 2000.

From what I was able to discover, that upgraded rear end was used in all 3000 series tractors from late 2000- 2005.
It was used in some of the 2000 series tractors also, but without the diff lock.

I acquired one from a GT2544, circa 2004.
The GT2544 used a Hydrogear #918-3243 BDU-10L pump I believe, and the 3000 series tractors used a Hydrogear #918-3214 BDU-21L pump.

Both pumps have the same 4 bolt pattern, and they interchange.
Just keep the beveled drive coupler matched to the pump, and you should be fine. Those couplers are pump specific on the input side, but fit both early and late rear ends on the ring gear side.

The only thing you lose with this swap is the fragile diff lock.
That's a bonus IMHO.

Used 2000 series hydro tractors can be bought dirt cheap, and if you part out the rest, you might actually get paid to fix your 3240....

Here's a pic of my 3206 with the original BDU-21L pump affixed the the 2000 series cast iron rear end. 100% bolt in.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
