Just started getting parts around to rebuild a somewhat sloppy gearbox. I'm sure it would have given me a few years of trouble free performance, but I'm slightly anal about things, and figure I'll spend less money doing the overhaul now, versus later, after worn bearings have chewed up the gears, shafts, and possibly the housing.
Sorry, no pictures as of yet, but I can provide some part numbers for everyone, since my searches on here turned up nothing. I couldn't source the oil seals from an alternate vendor, so I bought them from Cub Cadet, part number TC-788025 @ $10.65 each. The bearings were just ordered from McMaster-Carr, and the part numbers are as follows: 60355K507 @ $7.10 each, and 2780T63 @ $17.85 each. I'll try to remember to stop and take some pictures of my progress, and post them. I do have a question for you guys, what colors should this gearbox/mounting bracket be painted? It is a bit of a hodge podge, a #2 tiller (2B at that), 1A box and mount, on a 123. How would this have looked at the dealership, if this combo had existed? I know all of the tillers were white, but what about the other bits? Also, what are you guys running in your gearboxes, grease/oil wise? Thanks. |

AFAIK, ALL attachments were painted IH off-white. It was a different color than the white on the tractors.

Well, here she is. I went with the same Rustoleum canvas white that I've found to be a match with the early white, cleaned up the aluminum, and painted the cast iron pulleys with cast iron colored paint. I made my own gasket and filled her with gear oil. I hate to admit it, but I broke the cheap pulley, pressing it off of the shaft, and had to replace that. I also had to swap out the gears, since mine was getting hung up on a tooth. I blued it, filed, but couldn't get it right. A guy I know swapped me gears, and all is good. Thanks guys for your help. Now I need to get the rest of the tiller ready. I have already made the height adjustment handle, with some help from Jeff in PA. He does quality work and was very helpful.

Thanks, I think my work looks better in pictures than in person, due to my awesome photography skills. I work a goofy 12 hour, two on, two off type schedule, so I have quite a few days off to work on projects. I just have too many projects going on, in the garage, house, and yard.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
