Default M-18 in my 782..??

Has anyone swapped a M-18 into the 782? If so, can you give me some help? I'm having a time getting the ignition switch/ignition to work.

The ignition switch for a 782 and the one needed for a M-18 are totally different.

There are two different wiring diagrams for the 782 model. depending on the Chassis Serial Number. If you supply your serial number, I'll send the correct wiring modification for your tractor.

FWIW
In a nutshell:
The m-18 requires a ground position to kill the mag.ignition.
Your oem switch provides power to a ignition coil or no power to the coil to stop the engine.( M-18 does not use this system, it has a mag)
The start terminal will remain the same.
There are several ways to go about this, one involves a simple relay,
and several articles here relating to this, just use the search feature.

My 1712 has a M18 and to start the tractor you turn the switch on and it has a toggle switch for the mag. Vice versa to turn it off. Seems to work fine.

Thanks for all the responses. its number is 690876, which makes it an '81 i think. the engine serial is 2613402836. i have a relay, but the diagram i have, i dont understand. my father also said "lets just use a toggle", but i want to keep "Big Red" as it has affectionaltly earned the name, as close to original as possible. any help you guys can give is greatly appreciated.

ive also heard that a 582 harness will wire right up??

aj, that is the diagram that i have, but i dont understand the ignition switch??

thanks again, jon

Now that we know that you have a IH built 782, I have sent you a full size Wiring Diagram to the E-Mail address listed in your profile, with the slight modification needed to accomplish the M-18 retrofit.

I have attached it here also.

Jon, I would go with your instinct and NOT use a toggle. The relay is simple to wire in and like you, I wouldn't want it to look Jerry Rigged.

Jon basically what you do is add the relay between your tractor wiring harness and the motor wiring harness. Most people mount the relay either on the firewall or near the intake on the engine.

On the relay, terminals 86 and 87A both go to ground. The purple wire that went to the coil connects to terminal 85, and the white wire from the motor goes to terminal 30.

Basically what you are doing is when the ignition switch is turned off, the relay connects the white wire from the engine to a ground. When you turn the ignition on, the white wire will connect to a open terminal on the relay so that the white wire is no longer grounded. Grounding the white wire is how you kill the engine on magnums.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
