I had one like yours, bent the tab and it worked great. I think when the part is heat treated, they try to keep the hardness in the wear area. I'm glad it worked out for you.

I think there was s serial number break or something like that--one batch you could bend, the other you could not--I remember reading this in the manual. Anyway I know I have broken one, maybe 2. Too bad there isn't someone who repairs broken ACR components.

I would have just removed the 4 bolts on the cam cover and fixed it from there. Wouldn't have cost so much, or taken so much time to do from that hole. I mentioned that in post #6.

I agree you should adjust the valves. Especially since you have it out and all apart anyway.

Is the hole just stripped? I've put heli-coils in several and they held. Alvy is right, a cast iron pan fixes all issues.

I have to look at my 108 which has an ACR issue, too. It turns over and starts OK, but occasionally stops on the compression stroke and the starter belt squeals a little. But it's always started, so it more of an annoyance than a roadblock.

On the oil pan, I've Heli-coiled several. Get the kit, drill out and tap the holes, and screw in the inserts. Works fine. I figure if they lasted 40 years so far, the helicoil fix should work for another...And once you have the drill and tap set, the only cost is the inserts.

JMech,
I have checked the valve lash adjustment and both valves were within specs. I do not remember the actual specs. now. I need to pull the oil pan as one thread was stripped and the other three were almost there. I would like to find a cast oil pan rather than try to fix this aluminum one. I appreciate your input and the other members input as well. What a great Forum and a great group of members. Have a great day.
Bob

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
