I just bought an 1860 with the Kohler 18hp magnum. It runs excellent and everything works. I bougth it mainly for the front axle to do the super steering upgrade on my 149. I had no idea this thing was in such good mechanical condition. The motor purrs... The plastic parts are trash. It does have tilt steering.
My questions are: 1) Is the engine a straight bolt in for the 982? 2) Could the tilt steering be used on the 982? 3) Would be very cool to have this engine in one of my 149s, make it a 189:biggrin2.gif: 4) What other parts would be good to use as upgrades to the 982 or 149? I haven't had time to take anything apart and measure, explore, etc.. just thought some of you could give me a heads up on what I could use. I don't plan on selling any parts until I have exhausted my options.

The 'tilt' part of the tilt column is flimsy. Don't bother with that. If you lengthen the driveshaft, you might be able to use it in the 982. That would be an improvement, as it has CV joints instead of rag joints. Alternately, you could put the hydro pump and driveshaft in your 149 if the 1860 pump has caps where the 149's has ports. The 982 will need some wiring mods to allow the engine to work. The engine will not work at all in your 149; you would have to cut away most of the frame and that would weaken it substantially. Hang onto the 30mm axles and carrier in the rear if you have an IH-built 982, as those were susceptible to twisting off axles if worked hard.

It seems like a shame to part out a good running tractor. For what it’s worth I’ve glued the plastic on the Cyclops with 3M structural adhesive with good results. I replaced the push pins in the front of the side panels with some threaded rod and glued them in with the 3M stuff a couple nuts and washers and it works just fine. Other thought is maybe you could put 82 series sheet metal on it. Don’t know if this would work or not. Or just take your time and find some better Cyclops plastic.

Matt, is this the same engine that is in the 1872? The reason I ask is I really want an 1872 over the 982 and if it is a direct replacement I will hold on to it and wait for an 1872 that needs an engine to come along. There is one on ebay now listed as an 1860 but it is way to far away from me. That would be a great deal to get though. I found it just looking at values on 1860 parts.

That machine has had a hard life. I can see a lot of rust on the frame and fenders. In addition to having to get new plastic parts (extremely hard to find good ones and $$$$$$$$$ when found), these all had paint issues. I'm willing to bet the footrests are rusted out under the footpads, and there may be other major rust issues that can't be seen. The wiring was not good on these as well. The 1860 is not really a collectible tractor, as it has manual lift and steering. It's not an 1862 or a super, so it's probably better off fixing up several more desirable machines. cub149- Yes, same engine as an 1872. Just add PS to the 982 and you'll have a better tractor than the 1872 IMO. |

Sam Mac- No sleep lost parting out this rust bucket. Bolt heads rusted down to round, so throw out the wrenches and break out the cutting tools. Also, my 149 is going to love the upgraded steering and so am I.
Matt- Would love to put PS on the 982 but money is an issue. Also, I think I am partial to the white and yellow. We'll see. Thanks for the info though, still throwing ideas around in my head.

I understand. I have an 1872 but wish it was a 982 because I like the red ones. I also feel like IH was a little more careful assembling the rears than CCC was, after taking apart a couple of each. Now my 1872 has an IH rear with the stronger CCC internals, but I wish it would turn red on me:biggrin2.gif:

Is the pump in the 1860 built the same as ones in the 149s? I happen to have one of the best/strongest pumps I have ever had on a Cub. I've had a 1650, 982 and two 149s but this is by far the strongest yet.
