Default New To Me Tired 1450

Howdy folks. Picked up this 1450 yesterday. The gentleman who sold it to me was telling me about his father, and how he was quite the cub fan. When I was there I saw some of his fathers handy work on projects, including a rebuilt 782 that looked like new, and other Cub projects. He was quite the craftsman. This 1450 was just another Cub they had bought to restore, or use for parts. Unfortunately, his father passed about a month ago, and he put a lot of his fathers projects up for sale. Not for the need of money, but to clear up space at his parents house. Just thought I would tell you that because the guy was super nice, and he had a lot of fond memories with his dad and the Cub projects.

Now back to this 1450. It is rough. I eventually got it started with the help of a rebuilt carb, new points, new condenser and like new coil. All of these parts were off of a 16hp Kohler I had bought a couple of weeks ago, (jmech was gracious enough to tell me what would and would not be swappable with my 12 hp in the 1200). As it turns out, the 14hp and the 16hp take some of the same parts, so the 16hp kohler purchase has paid off already! Now that it runs, I have found out more about what it needs. First off the motor smokes. Second, the hydraulic control valve for the deck and rear lift is seized. Both valves are stuck down. I squirted them down with pb blaster in hopes that they will free on their own. And lastly the forward and reverse alignment is way off. The neutral position with the dash control arm still caused forward movement. I will eventually have to work through these issues.
Any advice on the seized hydraulic valves?
Once I get the fender pan off I can take a closer look at the shift linkage and look for wear. It is WAY off somewhere.
Along with the 1450, I bought a very good condition fender pan, a nice pair of side panels from a 782 that will fit my 1811. A spare hood for the 1450, front top and bottom tins for a K17/18 for my 1811, an extra upper nose piece for the 1450 or 1200, and a deck lift assembly (that may or may not have come from the 1450). All this and delivery for 350.00, I of course, did not complain. Here are some pick of the 1450. Thanks, TB

Yer favorite penetrating oil on the spool valve should free it up, given time.
check to see if it is the spool, or the linkage frozen.
Be careful with the lever cross rod, they are easy to bend/break where the pins are driven in.
Sometimes a little coaxing on the spool with a plastic hammer, helps after the penetrating oil has a week or more to work.

Thanks ol'George. The linkage moves freely all the way to the valves. If the pen oil does not do the trick, I will administer some love taps

Great story TB, a lot of us love working with our dads on these things and our sons/daughters, etc. Always quality time doing that.

Glad to see you got another. How many does that make now for you? I'm thinking Cubs are more rare in Texas than in Florida

That one makes 4. The good Cubs are hard to find around here. I next to never see one for sale, much less find a mower deck for one. This 1450 was 35 miles from here, I was lucky to find it. Thanks, TB

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
