I hear all of y'all talking about all the other clubs the 82 series and such but I very rarely hear y'all talk about a 582 is there anything wrong with that model that just makes it less desirable or what just curiousand just what exactly I'm not really for sure makes the difference between a super and regular garden tractor

The 582 is a good tractor. A lot of guys just don't want a gear drive. The engines had some issues. They were known for dropping valve seats. Not any real good way to fix them. Otherwise, they're just a gear drive '82 so an overall really good machine.
A SGT has larger tires, a longer frame, heavier front axle, usually a larger engine. They came with a few more options than the GT's which could include power steering, turning brakes, 3pt hitch, front hydraulic remotes and rear PTO. Power steering and turning brakes were standard on all but just a few of the SGT's. The rest of the list were optional. |

that sounds great I kinda like the old of gear drive to me they seem more reliable I do like the comfort of the hydrostat in the ease of forward and reverse it seems like you get little more pulling power out of the gear drive especially with a creeper gearI picked up my 582 for a hundred bucks engine runs good doesn't smoke I'm going to need to clean the carburetor and do a few minor touch ups then I'm going to fabricate a three point hitch whether it be manual or electric I'm not for sure I've dabbled with the ideal to putting hydraulics on it but I just can't afford that right now

By all rights, you DO get more pulling power out of a gear drive. Hydrostats are only about 80% efficient.

I'm hoping that you picked up a good old 582 and not a 582 special, a 582 special is a glorified grass cutter and has only a fraction of the pulling capabilities of a 582.
Please keep in mind that a creeper is NOT intended to be a gear reduction for pulling, in all actuality a creeper is the "weak link" in the drive train. You don't need to break very many of them before they start to get expensive. I may be wrong but I don't believe that an electric or hydraulic lift was an option for the 582 and I don't know that either can be easily adapted from another machine. It is my opinion that this was one of the downfalls of the later gear drive tractors, by this time in Cub history "the people" were wanting more and better options and they just weren't available for the 582. The good news is that adding options to your 582 is only limited by your fabricating skills and ability, along with how thick your wallet is. This is not to say that the 582's are not a great machine because they are, it's just that many of the goodies weren't available for them.

Nothing like a good ol 582,I have IH one and a yellow and white CCC.Spring assist will help,and it works rather well.
Never had a super,but I hope to one day and these guys will help you out when it comes to fix'n them. Here are my 2

How difficult would a M18 or KT17 swap be into a 582? I wouldn't mind adding one to the fleet but I'm not real high on the Briggs.

Basically a drop in. A little wiring to do, but it's easy. Might have to adjust the driveshaft length.

I passed up on 582 special while working out in west Tennessee over the summer, looked at one in Clarksville, was built in the Brownsville TN plant. It wouldn't fit on the flatbed I was driving with all the stuff I had and did t want to rent a trailer. Had a Briggs though. Would have gotten it if closer.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester.
