Default Bought My 2nd Cub

Looking through Craigslist this morning and saw a Cub mixed in with some other mowers for sale. http://chattanooga.craigslist.org/grd/4798870563.html
It's a 1641 (I think) with a 48 inch deck. It cranks, runs and the blades engage but it's got some serious cobbling done on it. It drove up on the trailer and the trans seemed to work as it should though it was hard to operate with the modified lever. I took some pictures of the problems I saw right away. The plastic has the tits broke off and one hood mounting screw tab is broken but it may be salvageable. The hour meter shows in the 800's. Steering needs to be tightened up. Not sure what the screen door spring is doing.

Nice catch , except for the nose the rest of the plastic looks OK. Don't you just love when a temporary fix become permanent. Asking price wasn't too bad, hope you made him an Lew offer.

From what you said and what I see, the plastic is easily repairable if you DO IT NOW!. Don't wait until the grill breaks off from the mounting point.

Side panel nubs are an easy repair too.

Nice find

I'm always glad to see the Cyclops' saved, I think they are an underappreciated Cub by the masses.

No Lew offer, I thought it was cheap enough at $275. There wasn't much room to come down. I could not get it to stay running to unload it, I had to drag it off the trailer with a green mower. It would start run about 10 seconds and quit, maybe out of gas or sucked some bad gas into it earlier. First Vanguard I've ever touched. I did wedge the bypass knob up to move it. Are all the 48 inch GT decks the same?

Nice score! I saw that ad and thought about calling but I'm out of space at the moment. Plus if I spent $$$ on a GT at Christmas I would be sleeping with the dogs outside.

Yep, I saw that one too and it was priced right. That spring looks like he was using it as a brake return spring. The Vangaurds are great engines. Good job on saving it.

Nice find. My guess on the spring would be that the brake return spring inside the frame came off/got lost and the PO either didn't realize there is suppose to be a spring in there or couldn't get it to stay in place. I have an 1811 that the return spring came off and I ended up making a couple of tabs to mount it to. One slipped over the pin connecting the rock shaft to the actual brake caliper and one that I bolted to the frame back near the axle using an existing bolt in my frame.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
