Great tractor! The hydro seens to be working very well. I dont know what the knock is as I have shot too many guns and I'am almost deaf. It is up to you if you want the factory air cleaner or spend the money better else-where for now. I would go with a factory air cleaner down the line. It may be better to have a look at the knock before it gets worse to advoid any extra damage. But there is no shame for a knock with a tractor this old. And when you do choose to have it repaired, it should last another 44 years with proper attention. We here at Only Cub Cadets.net are glad to have you! When I see a person take a intrest in these tractors, I'am charmed, because I know you know I know! Folks here are light-years beyond me in the service of these machines and very-much willing to help you and that tractor as I have found! I would have to say money well spent!

I'm definitely going to figure that knock out first thing. I will probably start this weekend. Learning how to fix the engine is one of the main reasons I bought one of these tractors. Because there is such a huge community around them and parts are everywhere, I figured it would be a great start.

Nice looking 123! You've made me look forward to getting the headlights working on my 122. Just got the new bulbs in yesterday. Your head light switch is where the cigarette lighter goes. Which is minor and the cigarette was a rare option. The light switch goes on the left side of the dash a bit lower then the hood. If you look you'll see the hole. I suspect they moved it to make it easier to use. The hydro seems to work well. I haven't seen the round covers (for a lack of a better word) around the key switch and light switch. I guess someone didn't want to chip the paint. I'm fairly new to this as well and some of the old pro's (pun intended) will be able to verify that and help you with the engine noise.

Thanks for all the info everyone. I guess list I saw of serial numbers was wrong, or I read it wrong, which is VERY likely.

I can't believe those things had an optional cigarette lighter. I'm only 27, so I didn't grow in a world where it was completely normal for everyone to smoke, kinda funny see that as an option. An now that I know the key and the light switch are either not for that tractor or in the wrong place, respectively, I will definitely won't be worried about changing them around. I'm thinking maybe a push button start? And then relocating the light switch to make it easier to see and get to. I think I'll look into a voltmeter too for the battery.

Binder Book (site sponser look for their banner at the top of the page) has all the manuals and service manuals that you'll find most helpful when you start your repairs. In the technical section of the site you'll be able to find the manuals as well but I think it's cheaper to get the binder books then prining out the manuals. Also in the technical section of the site you'll be able to find all options and implements that was avilable for your 123. Look for the 1x2/3 Series that's for the 71, 102, 122 and123 tractors like ours. I don't even smoke and I want a cigarette lighter for my 122.

Great idea about taking videos of everything you do to your 123 . I do not think their are any vids on youtube of a 123 rebuild. I to am a novice with engines but want to learn . Welome to the forums.
