I never looked at how well the solenoid was grounded....I think I will do this. I also think I'll run 12v from the battery directly to the starter and see what happens that way too.

Thanks ironman for the link!

DX, I can’t say for sure what your problem is but I had a very similar problem with my SLT-1554 with a 27hp Courage engine and my problem turned out to be the starter. At first mine would just spin slowly and struggle on the compression strokes and over a period of months I did many of the same checks you are making but the situation slowly got worse. For a while it would start with my light duty jump-box but after a while that no longer worked so I started using my pickup truck and eventually that wouldn’t even work so after I had checked and rechecked everything I decided to just get a replacement starter. Problem was solved. F Y I my SLT is a 2006 with 800 hours and I am now on my third starter but I used it for about 2 hours today and it starts great. I hope this helps.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
