LT 1045 bad clutch?
Hi all-
1st post...I just bought a used LT1045, 320 hours, very well maintained and clean. I have used it a few times over the past few weeks to mulch leaves, it has been working fine. This morning, the PTO clutch/wheel stopped spinning. It won't even spin when the deck belt is off. Wiring seems to be ok. Not sure what else it could be. I'd hate to buy a $200 clutch for a $400 mower. Thanks for any help - seems like a cool website. Joe |

When you say "wiring seems ok", does that mean you took out your multi-meter and confirmed that the clutch is getting 12V when it is supposed to be on? Or does that mean the wiring is visually there?
Verification that it is getting voltage is the test you need to do. If it is and it is not working..... it is bad. |

Yup. I'm new at this...just a visual. The multimeter I have is for household, I don't think it goes down that low. Do they make them for small engine applications?

Most all multi-meters I have ever seen have an AC and DC setting. Never seen one that didn't have both. If your unsure, you can post a pic of it and I can tell.

I have a voltmeter, not a multimeter. I'll hit the hardware store in the morning. Am I testing the line from the battery, or the line out from the clutch? also, I keep reading that a bad connection from the reverse safety mechanism cause the clutch to fail?

It can cause it not to work.... but not fail.

Am I checking the power on the line from the battery, or the line out from the clutch?

I would be checking to see that the clutch is getting power when it is supposed to. Do you not understand what I mean? PTO unplugged, key on, engine off, weight on the seat (to activate the safety switch), PTO switch "ON". Should have two wires running to it. One for power and one for ground. |

Cool. I saw a youtube video where a guy was checking the voltage on a clutch that was not installed. Not sure why a disconnected clutch would read on a meter?

You'll get much better responses if you stick with the help you get here verses a YouTube video comparison.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
