Default PTO will not engage when hot

I have an LT 1024 50" Cub Cadet. It is about 10 years old. It starts fine and cuts fine. After about 30 min of mowing if I stop the blades the PTO will not engage the blades again. If I let the mower sit for about 30 minutes the PTO will start to work again. What is the cause for this? What can I check?

May be time for a new PTO. Take it off and check it out.

I just went through that exact issue on my 2166, 10 years old.

I figured it was the PTO clutch, so I replaced it, problem was solved.

Found one on ebay for about half what a dealer wanted, it was exactly the same part as oem.

I agree with Sam, check it out. Best to do it when it quits. But, if bad, you don't have to buy a whole new PTO. Just the coil is all that you would have to buy.

Just my 2 cents but at 10 years old you may be better to replace the whole thing, the coil is probably on the way out and the bearings can't be far behind. Yes it can be rebuilt if you know what you are doing.

Yep but I doubt it. I think you got all the good out of the PTO but what do I know. Let us know what you find out.

I think I will just run it till it dies. Not worth trying to fix it.

Thanks for all the help though.

You say the machine starts fine and cuts fine, but it is not worth trying to fix...

Why do you say that?

Probably because it's a 10yr old LT. A new PTO would cost as much as the tractor is worth.....

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
