Re-sealing 1772 relief valves
Fired up my 1772 this past weekend, let run to warm up in garage, went back to it and hytrans all over floor in garage-weep hole on top of forward valve... Was first time starting in the now colder weather. Have replaced one valve already for same concern year ago with a new one from local cub supplier $200cdn for one..
Anyone have any luck resealing these themselves? I have searched and seen many threads for sending them to a specific guy for rebuild in the U.S.A. Think by the time I send it to him from Canada and have it shipped back it wont be worth it money wise compared to cost of new one. Have access to lathe to cut crimp off and tigwelder to secure cap back on. I guess if it doesn't work I'm out the cost of the internal O-ring. Thoughts?

I don't know anyone on here who has done it. This is the guy we all send to: http://www.machtechdirect.com/hydro-valves.html I think the price listed on that page is for a new one. I believe exchange for rebuilt is $40. Is it really that much to ship things back and forth from Canada? I've never done it. You guys always say how much it is..... Would it really cost you $150 to and from? |

I've shipped alot of stuff to Canada and it's always expensive, it cost about triple what it would to ship in the lower 48. I've sent a few things to Australia also and that's even worse, I had a high end RC car for sale and a guy from Australia bought it and it cost $180 to ship it and that wasn't even for fast shipping, it went over on a boat and took a month for him to get it.

Got some time on Saturday, went to buddies that has lathe, trimmed off crimp and pulled the guts out of the relief valve, the o-ring on the pintle was flat and covered in gunk-I assume moisture maybe gets in the top from the weep hole? Got every thing cleaned out internally with some light emery and oil. Reassembled with new o-ring on pintle and tacked the cap back on. There is no internal pump clearance issues to worry about from the little bit of weld build up on end. By the time I got the weld smoothed off it takes up less space then the original rolled edge from crimp. New external O-rings, a bit of paint on the bare metal, and a dunk in some hytrans before reinstalling. Tractor works great and no leaks. Wish I had of done this to the other valve that let go on me a couple years ago, this was one of the easier repairs on this thing I have done.
Sorry not sure why pictures are so big and sideways...

Just a FYI when I had Machtech do my valves they replaced just about everything that is inside along with all new seals. They sent the old parts back along with the repaired valves.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
