Default Leaking seal on hydostatic trunnion shaft

Hi:

I purchased a used 125 and have a fairly large leak coming from the trunnion shaft seal. How big of a job is it to replace the seal?

Thanks,

Thad

I believe 3 of the 4 lip seals are replaceable without opening up the hydro
They might be replaceable without pulling the rear end, maybe. I would
pull the rear end to simplify the job. The fourth seal which is the one
the trunion shaft comes through requires opening up the pump.
Are you positive that the leak is the seals? The cork gasket is pretty
famous for leaking. To replace it requires splitting the tractor but that
is not a bad job to do.

I have a similar leak. From what I can tell going through the parts and repair manuals, the pump will need pulled apart to get the trunnion shaft out of the way for seal replacement.

I also would check to make sure the cork gasket where the hydro unit bolts the rear casting/differential is not leaking. Mine leaked a lot and replacing it cut down oil loss a huge amount, now it's more like weepage from the trunnion seal I can live with considering the work to replace it.

A service manual is the way to go to make sure you didn't forget anything and the linkage setup is correct.

I saw the a drop coming from the right side seal. Do I need to take the pump apart to replace the seal?

thanks

According to the Service Manual (see page 18) I'm guessing your answer would be no.

Cool!! The IH Service Manual does not show that. That area is in tear down/ inspection.

It's a very thin profile seal so getting a small enough tool, maybe a stout O-ring pick to pry with.

Not much room in the tractor chassis, my guess the pump would come out but a least there's no pump disassembly and with the new style pump mounting gaskets that leak potential is covered.

Thanks for the link!!

If you do decide to tear into it, or if you just want to look at more info,
go to this link, page 2-35 and on covers the hydro.

Ahaa. It's coming back to my earlier statement. Check parts exploded view on page 2-38

To get the seal, (#5) out; trunnion shaft (#49) and washer (#42), has to be removed.

Page 2-48 is where I got hung up thinking of just a seal replacement with a maybe a trunnion shaft removal

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
