Default K301 in an "O"

I've got an Original that has a 10 hp engine in it already so, the Correctness Police need not apply.

My son and I have been delving into doing some small-time tractor pulling and our season is just starting. I was thinking about rebuilding a 12 horse engine with him so that he can learn more about mechanics, and hopefully, take better care of the stuff he operates (his AND MINE!).

A friend gave me a K301AS engine and there are some things that I know I'd need to change. It has a deep oil pan (and I'm sure the long dipper on the rod) so I'd need to find a flat-bottom pan for it.

It is my understanding that the 10 horse and 12 horse blocks are identical. That said, my 10 horse flat pan that is already in the Original would work. But I'd rather not tear that engine for parts if I don't have to.

We would be getting a new piston and rod (bored block) but I'm wondering if I purchased a flat-bottom pan, would I just trim the dipper or, did some K301s come with a flat pan? Is there a cast-iron pan AND an aluminum one? Surely, the cast iron one would be better, right?

Just starting to gather info on this so, any info is GOOD info.

I'll have some pics of the engine once I can dig out . Here's my "O" in the meantime.

thanks!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
