Default Results of taking 18 Kohlers apart

tore down 1 - 341 , 1 - 321 , 1 - 241 & 15 - 301.
here are the results after checking parts for reuse , your results may vary

of 18 cranks 1 was usable it was a magnum crank with the bolt to hold the flywheel
of 18 cams 3 had issues with the compression release

of 18 blocks 0 had a decent bore for reuse

pic 2 this is why you don't use silicone or use very little if you do

pic 3 still trying to figure that modification out. it had grade 5 bolts

I was hoping this was about the M18 engine, as I have 2 of them to work on..
one ran but smoked (story from PO but the new starter that was there is worth more than what I paid for the whole engine by itself... so was the good muffler-- I had to pay $30 for just a muffler (used at that) at a GT swap meet this past summer, from a Kohler opposed twin... paid less than that for this whole motor.... so if it winds up as "parts", I'll get my money's worth from it just in that dep't...
the other one was "stuck" from sitting, I did get it freed up but I don't like the way the one cylinder looks..... will check them both out thoroughly, but hoping to get away with just a "top end" rebuild on one or both, but time will tell once I get them the rest of the way apart...… not trying to start a war by saying that.... just hopeful thinking at this point though.

Good luck! A lot of swappable parts at least between these and KTs, so it's not so hard to get one put back together. Once you start having to go NOS for internals, it gets spendy quick though.

yeah I know..... hate to demote any complete, potentially runnable and not blown up engine to "parts donor" status.... especially these since they are so hard to come by. I have 2 tractors running KTs (one each Series) that I like, so I'm wanting to build up at least 1 as a ready spare. at least a ready longblock… neither of my tractors are new any more, and I don't put many hours on them (my yard would do fine with a push mower) just like playing on them mostly

I’m in the same boat. I have 5 tractors that need engines and I’ve got 6 or 7 engines sitting around that I think will run. Want to have one solid spare. Also have an M20 with a broken rod that I’m going to try to repair to do something with. Maybe swap into a tractor. Maybe sell or trade it. I don’t have much in it and it has a good (I think) PTO on it that’s probably worth as much as I put into it on its own.

M18s are findable. M20s I don’t see too often around here.

I'm not sure what Don tearing down a bunch of K series has to do with rebuilding KT's and M18's......

I first was confused also because the title says "Results of taking M18 Kohlers apart".

I have corrected the title. It is 18 Kohler K series engines.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
