Default 1863 PTO Removal

Last time after I was done mowing, I had a screaching noise from the front of the engine when starting. I thought it may have been the first bearing on the PTO but I had just replaced that last year. I had some smoke from the front of the engine when I shut it down and after I removed the front piece of the PTO with the front bearing, the noise remained until I sprayed the rear bearing nearest the engine with lubricant. So, the question is, how do you remove the PTO from the engine shaft? Do I need a special puller to get it off? I've tried gently prying and pulling but just won't budge.

Cub used a couple different styles of PTO's . Which one do you have, the one to the left or the one to the right?

Sam, I attached a pic with the puller I have (too small). It's the one on the left that you posted. Sorry the picture is flipped.

Maybe a little power blaster on the crank but other than that it should come of with a puller. I always put some never seize on the crank when I install a PTO. I flipped your pic.

I've used a bunch of penetrating oil on it...I need to grab a bigger puller I guess. Anti-seize will be added once I get it off.

the bearing race probably spun on the crank and galded it fast most likely your clutch is scrap , if you pull very hard on it you'll bend it

I was able to move it some, approx 1/2 in on the shaft now it seems stuck. There may be hope. I'm hoping a larger puller that can grasp it will help. Thanks guys, I'll keep you updated.

Well, I successfully removed the PTO from the shaft. I will be replacing the entire PTO. Any recommendations on the best place ot get one? Will the new one be as tough to put on as taking the old one off?

I would get one from Xtreme. https://xtremeope.com

A used one is a gamble, may or may not be good and the new ones from Cub are expensive and made in China. A lot here have used the ones listed above with good results. I am going to try one on the next one I need.

Thanks. I did see that site with a quick Google search, I will be going with them and let you know how I make out. Hopefully it goes on much easier than the old one came off.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
