Disc, general farming questions

I have gleaned some info from searches but I know there are life long experts here that can answer these questions.
I have a 3 point (homemade) with down force option only, so far as I know.
I just wanted to have some implements to play with so found a good deal on a Sears single gang disk in excellent condition, built a sleeve hitch adapter for it to hook to my 3 point.
After a couple of attempts I am going to assume that a disc needs to float?
Is this correct? (wish I would have paid more attention 40 yrs ago on my uncles farm).
As always any wisdom is greatly appreciated, and yes I know I probably need a 8" moldboard to hit it with first but this was the first I found.
Running a wf, 782 for the record.

All 3pt tillage equipment needs to float. You can't force it into the ground or you lose traction. You need to slot the lift straps if you haven't already.

I have a Brinly disk. They are almost piss-ass worthless. Even on plowed ground, the disc blades have too deep a dish, and can't be angled enough to make it work. I kept it, but I have some ideas for it I just haven't gotten to yet.

Yeah, you need to find a plow. The disc will not break ground. It will kind of stir the dirt if you plow first.

Yes the disc needs to float but that doesn't mean you can't load it with lots of weight to make it work.

btw, is that an 8 or 10 blade disc?

Odd angle pic, po had rigged up the tow behind for his quad, pic of tag also.
As you can see it's a 10 blade, they are 11.5" in dia.

It's all a learning experience for me, wanted something to play with, and was able to build a good sleeve hitch adapter that will hopefully come in handy later, as I'll be looking for a plow, maybe I can find another one and mount them together.

I was wondering if slotting the lift straps would work, it seemed right but happy to have someone verify.
