I really was not being critical of it so much.. I was just joking around. Truth is as long as it is mechanically sound, I would say it is not a horrible price. The only question I would have with it is what happened to the old rear fenders? I know where it is located is one of the worst places around for rust issues. If rust was the issue did it stop at the fenders? To far away from me to worry about anyway... No harm intended in my post tho.. Just kidding around

Isn't the rust issue in New York due to the amount of road salt used every winter? If so, I don't think it would have a great effect on tractors. Not trying to be a smarty pants here.

In another current thread a guy is being berated for wanting to scrap a 108 instead of fixing it. Now this 982 owner is getting grilled for fixing and replacing parts on his 982 to keep it going. Some of you guys are just never satisfied!

Oh yes... the tag is definitely IH. If it runs, it's probably not a bad price. But I'd still be shy of it.
I would agree but the front tires do look a whole lot like the OCC header featured 982 picture up there.
From the IH brochure?

982 is worth the price.
The kid with the 108 is been irritating us for awhile now. Just a bored kid messing with old tractor guys.

For the record, I don't have an issue with a guy fixing an old 982. But here's my thing..... he's adamant on the price, and advertises it as an IH 982. While I agree, the frame and tag are from a 982, and as it looks, so is the hood, just from a yellow and white one. Maybe that's what the fenders came from too.... but not the tires. The tires are from a Cyclops machine. So, why all the spare parts? Did a tree fall on it? Where is the missing 3 point arm? Is the rear PTO any good? He says it runs, "smooth and quiet". How many of you guys heard an Onan? They aren't very quiet. I guess you can say they are smooth, but not like a CH is smooth. He states a 54" deck, but it is obviously a 50" deck. This just doesn't look like a one-owner machine. It looks like a guy who likely bought it not running, swapped out of bunch of parts, used it once or twice to make sure it works, and put it up for sale. Like I said in my earlier post, if it runs good, it's worth the price. But I'm betting it needs a bunch of work. Obviously, this is pure speculation, but we've all seen tractors for sale like this. I could be totally wrong. Maybe he's like me and hates to paint, so he did all the mechanical work and it just needs a paint job. Only question it begs is why that info wouldn't be in the ad, and why is it still missing a link arm.

Ok, I'm done.

If it will crank and mow, then that's what those sell for. WE all know 982's are inflated. It has had 2 pcs of sheet metal replaced. If it really has rear PTO, thats and expensive option.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
