Default 1250 in MD

Hello from Maryland. I joined this site because of the overwhelming information there seems to be here. I have a 1250 (I believe a 1975) that was inherited from my Godparents. It has been an awesome tractor for me since 2005 but throughout this mowing season I have been having some issues with it. It seems that when I'm mowing grass after about 5-10 minutes the tractor begins to dog down almost to a stall while making a chattering noise toward the front of the tractor. If I turn the PTO switch off it will rev back up to normal. Then turning the PTO back on it will dog the engine down again. I have tried several things throughout the summer, new air filter, cleaned the carb, etc but I am pretty sure it has something to do with the PTO since turning it off alleviates the problem. If anyone on here has experienced this issue or has any knowledge to pass on it would be greatly appreciated. I'm not very experienced with the electronic PTO clutches on these tractors but would like to learn. I would love to get the old tractor running right again, give it a fresh coat of paint and keep it going for years to come. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Greg S.

Greg

Welcome to OCC.

Post your questions in this section and I'm sure you'll get plenty of help.
IH Cub Cadet Tractors (GT)

My guess is you have something wrong with the mower or the drive system for the mower causing drag.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
