Starter woes
I have a 3235 that I have replaced the starter (DB Electrical) too many times for what appears to be the same issue. DB electrical has been great, sending out a replacement. The problem is that even with a full charge on the battery, the bendix doesn't extend to engage the ring gear. It just spins in its' retracted position. I can work the key between on and off positions and after a few attempts the gear will then extend and engage turning the engine over to start. Charging system is putting out 13.75 when running. I have put a trickle charger on over night, but still the same scenario in the a.m..

New starter should not be causing the drain. How are the teeth on flywheel? With the starter disconnected does the battery still drain? You could have a short leading to the starter.

Thanks for the reply. I'm in Cobleskill NY. The starters work when I first install them. I removed the last one, leaving it hooked up so I could watch what I was hearing( the bendix spoolling up ) and saw the bendix spinning without extending. The battery is a year or two old, the teeth are all there on the ring gear. A few turns with the key usually will get things started. I just don't want to ask for yet another starter, but they are more than obliging to do so.

Can you put some lube on the shaft to help it move.
I put a relay on all my CHs. May not help here but if you put one on there is no question that the bendix is getting full power. This used to have pics: https://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/...t=Kohler+relay

Yes, the battery tender which indicates a full charge by a green light. Trying to start it at that moment will spin the gear, but not throw the bendix. And yes, 3 starters. I replaced the original starter for this reason, and then got about 2 years out of that. These last two have been just a couple months. It's intermittent. I can be running the tractor for a period of time, shut it off for a few minutes and go to start it and have the same thing happen. Most times a couple clicks with the key and it starts. Turns the engine over like it should. How would I check for a short?

I wouldn't put any lube on the shaft. Its just going to collect dirt and debris and cause other issues.

What he said.. Its meant to be dry. Otherwise it would have an oiler on it. I think your issue is a power issue.
