Default Cheap 88 pound Front Weight for XT3

If anyone is interested on how I made my own 88 pound front weight continue reading. I did this because my box scraper lifts the front end just enough to effect the steering.

I purchased a 3.5 gallon trash can (black trash so it matches the tractor), 2 steel hangers and 1 50lb bag of cement from Lowes for a total cost of around $13. Then I went to the local tire shop and they gave me 35lbs of scrap lead wheel weights for free. I then rummaged through my scrap wood bin found some teak for handles along with some nuts and bolts to secure everything into the concrete. Mixed it all up, nothing special here and let it cure overnight. I'll hang it on the tractor in a week when the concrete is fully cured. I ended up using the entire bag of concrete except about 1 cup full of mud. I used about 30-32 lbs of lead weights mixed in. The final product tipped the scales at 88lbs.

Odd.... my 42" tiller doesn't make the front of my 1050 light enough to be an issue. (That's a pretty light front end tractor compared to the older machines with a cast grille housing.) Can't believe that little box blade is as heavy as a tiller, or could cause any real steering issues.

Forgot to mention that I have a cinderblock on the back of the box scraper and I have the tractor's traction lock engaged.

You can't steer with the diff lock engaged. That's the issue. All the weight won't help unless you take your foot off the lock. Differential has to work in order to steer. Don't use that pedal unless you need it, and don't engage it when the wheels are spinning.

Operator error, not lack of weight.

Thanks for the tip. It's the first tractor I've had with the locking differential. I'll be testing it out with just the tire chains and the wheel weights and [hopefully] no traction lock.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
