Hello,

I recently picked up a Cub Cadet 1604 as a project. This will be my first cub, but I've had a John Deere 317 in the past but sold that when I ran into problems with the Kohler series 1 motor. My 316 was a bit nicer, but the Onan parts were just too tough to get my hands on so I let that go as well. I look forward to learning about these machines!

Welcome. I am not familiar with the 1604 but can tell you they were built from 1985 till 1986. It should have a briggs 16 hp twin cylinder horizontal engine. It does have a peerless transaxle which some people look down on as not being as strong as earlier cub rears but I have something like that in a Jacobsen and have had no problems except for a belt wearing out.

I live in Parish, about 30 minutes north of Syracuse. This is the same machine that was listen on Craigslist, I just did an even trade for a snowmobile trailer I had. He was a cool guy, he even showed up with two new front tires, I never even asked for them.

I'm just going to use it to mow my small 1/3 acre yard, and tow a aerator and roller a couple times a season.

Awesome! I'm not in need of anything heavy duty, just a small 1/3 acre yard to look after. I love these older machines.

I spent some time today out in the garage messing around with it, hooking the mower deck up and whatnot and really looking it over. So far I've noticed that the lights are not working. I've checked the connections and traced the wiring harness down the frame and everything looks okay, I'm assuming that the lights are turn on when the key is in the first position? Also, The shifter is really sloppy. 1,600 hours will do that to ya, it's it something maybe a few parts could tighten back up ?

Welcome aboard! I'm here in NY too, down near Elmira. Looks like you finally found the right color tractor to collect. Be careful, they have a way of following you home, sometimes two or three at a time!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
