Default Battery vs Magneto Ignition

How can you visibly tell if you have a Battery Ignition vs Magneto Ignition? The reason I ask is some Stens ignition switches are for magneto ignition and visibly look the same as ones supposedly for battery ignition. The terminology seems confusing because how could an engine start without a battery?

Look up the part number from the manufacturer, then cross it to Stens. This response is easier than explaining the different ignition systems, and why an electric starter has nothing to do with the ignition system.

That, or just state what you need a switch for, and we can tell you which switch you need.

What tractor are you working on? If it has a round coil then it's battery and if it has a spark plug wire coming from the blower housing then it's magneto. Kohler engines with a magneto should be marked magnum.

I’ll try, they both need a starter and battery, mag creates its own spark and doesn’t need the battery after the engine is started, it needs to be grounded to make it stop. Battery ignition needs the power from a battery to create the spark via the coil all the time.
So I hope that helps with understanding what the switch has to accomplish.

I replaced the ignition switch on my 682 (with a KT-17 Series I engine) with an OEM 925-3021 switch. I like to have spare parts on hand but could not find the Stens number.

That's a better question.
KT17 is battery ignition.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
