Any advice on the greenish waxy substance that covers the differential gears in the rear end of the 1450? Should I try to remove that, and if so, how?

Do you have any pics? If it's not too bad I'd fill it with some cheap hydro fluid and run it for a while and dump it rather than waste the big $$$ on Hy-Tran till you know it works, just my 2 cents.

A little disappointed tonight. Got back out to the garage and filled the 1450's rear end with hydraulic fluid, buttoned it up, and put a new filter on it.
attached a drill to the drive shaft and spun it up. No joy. the rear end did not move, the shaft spun but the hydrostat just sat there and chattered with the lever in "FWD" and did nothing when in "REV." I ran it for several minutes hoping it'd fill up with fluid and settle down, but it didn't seem to help any. Any thoughts? Spin it some more? How do I tell if the charge pump is filling the hydrostat? Or is it toast?

Did you run it in the right direction? You have to run the drill in reverse.

I ran it clockwise from the rear end of the input shaft. (sticks out the back over the gear box). Front shaft turns counter-clockwise. I assume that's OK? Same shaft, right?

I tried again to get this rear end running, but had the same result. When I spin the input shaft, the trunnion arm and control plate just chatters--in forward-- and does nothing in reverse. Do these symptoms sound familiar to anyone? No output to the rear end at all.
Plan B: got a line on a good ported hydrostat. I've never tried to remove/reinstall the hydraulic unit from the rear end of one of these tractors, so this will be a first. I do have the gaskets on hand, I think. Should get the hydro unit later this week. Meanwhile I think I'm going to put the front axle and wheels on it so I can roll it up to the workshop where I have better light and A/C. I'll split it there and see what I've got. If I put the K241 in it, it won't have a PTO and it doesn't have a lift, so it'll just be for pushing snow, which isn't all that often here in central VA. At least I'll get a chance to dissect a hydrostat. This is the storage building, what a mess... the subject tractor is there on the far right with the jack under it.

Unfortunately I have not been able to work on this tractor for over a month. Once I discovered the hydrostat was shot, I got distracted by other projects. Now I've got too many other things going on. May be after Thanksgiving (boat winterized) before I get back to it. It's striper season here on the Chesapeake. I do have a replacement hydrostat lined up, just need to run down to VA Beach to get it from another collector.
