Default 782 Dash Restore

Guys-
I am doing a repaint on a 782, and I would like to freshen up the dash. The raised silver lettering for the controls has worn off in places, making them hard to see. It looked crappy, so I repainted the whole thing black. I would like to get it back to more of a factory look. Any good ideas out there for restoring the lettering?

Thanks

Easily done with common products available at your local auto parts store and craft centers.

Clean the dash thoroughly with a plastic scrub brush. Use dish washing liquid in clean water and clean the old dash of all residues.

Inspect the raised lettering. If any letters or symbols are damaged, the "smushed" areas can be nudged back into shape with the tip of a pair of needle nose pliers or similar tool. Heating the damaged area with a hot air gun may help get it right without further distortion. Any plastic hairs can be cleaned away with an Xacto knife.

Several manufactures sell automotive quality vinyl dye in gloss or satin black. Spray on a few light coats of the vinyl dye and the dash will spring back to life.

Once the dash has dried, use a silver paint pen from a craft store to lightly wisk over the top of the lettering. A large chisel shaped tip on the paint pen works better than the fine pointed tips. Flat chisel tips glide over the top of the letters without dripping paint down the sides of the raised letters / symbols.

Take your time with the lettering. Do not try to get the letters covered in one coat. Apply several light coats and buildup to the final finish. If the tip of the paint pen accumulates too much paint, dab the tip in a paper towel and remove 80% of the paint. Leave just enough on the tip just to dry brush the paint over the lettering.

Once all the paint is dry, you may want to mist a matte clear coat over the final finish to protect the work.

Good prep of the old dash is critical and having patience to allow the paint to dry will prevent issues when you go to apply the silver. Go slow and you will have show quality results.

I have done several dashes for older Wheel Horse tractors. The difference is truly remarkable.
I'll post a few before and after pics later.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
