It looks like the ignition switch was the culprit. I did not replace the wiring harness. Cub Cadet Parts n More hasn't even shipped it yet, or even responded to my inquiry about the order. I will call and cancel that order tomorrow.

After replacing the ignition switch, the fuse no longer blows in any key position.

Bonus... in trying to track down the short to ground, I had removed the relay mod to simplify things. After changing the ignition switch, it cranks over every time without that mod. Great. Except now it's cranking but not starting. It's getting fuel, so I'm suspecting no spark. I am thinking I might have forgotten to re-connect something under the cover, but didn't have time to track that problem down. I'm fairly confident that's going to be a relatively easy fix.

But blowing fuses? Solved. Thanks to Billy-O and guyina4x4 for those tips!

Time to close this one out, thank goodness. The crank but no start turned out to be a wire I must have left loose under the shield, and the fan blades or something must have gotten a hold of it because it was all chewed up and insulation stripped off. A quick fix with some watertight disconnects and fresh wire to bridge between the factory disconnect and the frayed end...and we're back in business.

The freshly painted tins go on next, and it might be time for a photo!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
