450 impeller shaft
I'm in the process of tearing down my 450 snow thrower. Is the shaft that goes from the impeller to the front auger gear box supposed to be sloppy? I have the impeller with the shaft still roll pinned in place and it has a lot of slop in it. Just didn't know if this was normal. I'm probably going to be buying a new impeller since mine is heavily bent and the splines in back are shot.

I can not say, but if I was to venture a guess, I would be inclined to think....no slop.

And I would have to agree 100%, splines are made to be a snug fit.

The splines appear to be separate from the shaft. There is no movement of the spline while moving the shaft.

You mean if I had a welder and machine shop? Or if I knew how to weld or machine things? The impeller splines are all but gone. The impeller fins ingested a frozen 2x4 last winter so they're not looking too good either.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
