Default 2182 with Kubota doesnt charge

Got a 2182 with a Kubota 3 cyl gas. Cant seem to get it to charge. Have 40 ac volts out of alternator and have 12 volts to the r/r Does anyone know of any other fuses besides the one by the battery. And what should be coming out of the r/r when its running on the certain color wires and I am assuming it should be charging like 13 to 14 volts. Thanks Newt

If I decipher your post correctly, I think you are say that the Output of Alternator is +/- 40 VAC. The the Output from the Rectifier/Regulator is +/- 12 VDC (as measured from Red wire to ground) ...???

Typical, the DC output voltage should be in the neighborhood of 14.5 VDC.

That's correct but I just cant seem to figure out why it isn't charging. The alternator checks ok and its a new r/r im just baffled at this point

Sam our 2182 expert is under the weather.
I can try to help but the regulator on a 2182 is overly complicated. The problem is that many of the connectors will be corroded. They were not the best connectors, so bad that I rewired my whole tractor. I used a Kohler regulator.
If this something you are not interested in you will have to get the wiring diagram and start checking.
I would start by checking every connector for proper function.

Edit: do you have the proper AC right at the plug by the regulator? Or did you check over by the alternator? Try to check this as close to the regulator as possible.

There is a Fuse in the DC Output circuit (Red Wire). According to the Wiring Diagram, it is between the R/R and the Large Terminal on the Starter (cable from Red battery cable). I would be checking that out.

And you didn't answer the questions we asked in it?


There should be around 14V dc coming out of both the red and yellow wires on the regulator.

40VAC is too high for the alternator. I earlier suggested 30 VAC, but the manual says 20VAC. I'm thinking the alternator is bad, and burning up the R/R's.

I have 40 ac volts between the 2 wires off the alternator. when wot. So that is to high I don't have a manual for the engine.

According to the manual, yes, that is too high. If you have a local alternator repair shop, I'd check with them though. Or even a Kubota dealer. The Cub Cadet manual states 20 VAC out of the alternator.

Ok so if I check the 2 wires coming into the regulator from the alternator should be 20 ac volts

I went back and checked the book again just to be sure on the specs. It states 20 VAC or more at 5200 RPM (that's alternator RPM, so WOT on the engine). It does not give a "max" output. Just says 20 VAC or more, so not sure if 40 VAC is too much or not. Again, it might be good to check with an alternator shop.

Yes, check the the two wires from the alt, going to the R/R. Put one lead in each wire. Make sure to have your DVOM set to A/C voltage.

Whatever you get, if it's at least 20 VAC, plug it back into the R/R. Then again, running it WOT, check to see what you are getting coming out of the R/R on the red wire. Should be around 14 VDC. You can check the yellow wire too, but if the red one is working, the yellow one should too. It appears to just be a dual output R/R.
