Default Serial Number = Model? Year?

I picked up a 149 from a "friend" of mine last summer. The tractor has obviously been abused and neglected. I have been reading up on Cub Cadets over the winter. A couple of days ago I found this site. What a wealth of info!! Anyways, my question is about the serial number on the tractor. Supposedly you can cipher out the year of the tractor, model and other information from the number. From what I've read on here and other sites I can't make heads or tails of it. Can anybody help me out with this? The serial number is on the left side of the tractor on a plate. It reads: 2050047U303970. Thank for any help in advance.

Default 149 year

Thanks for the info site CubCadet123. Form what I've read the last 6 numbers denote the year of the tractor. According to the link you supplied, mine was built in June 1969. It's my understanding 149s came out in 1970. Would this mean that it was built in 1969 and sold in 1970? Making it a 1970.....correct?

Or someone at some point destroyed the original rear end, and replaced it with one out of an older cub. The serial number you found was on the left side of the rear end next to the differential cover, was it not? I am not 100% sure, but high 90's anyhow, that the cast iron rear from most older cubs would be interchangeable. There may be differences from hydros to gear drives, and of course the differences between internal and external brakes (yours has external disk brakes).

I have to agree that the kind code and the serial number do not match. I don't have a wf to see how they did the tags. If all the info is on 1 tag, then I would have to say that the serial number you listed is not correct and someone has misread a number. I would have to say that the serial number you posted would be way to early to even think it was a prototype or something.

It reads: 2050047U303970.
The 2050047 = Factory Code for a 149
U = Made in USA
303970 = is the actual sequential serial number.

There is a problem with the above serial number. The 149 was in production from Sep 1971 through Oct 1974. Serial number 303970 indicates it rolled out of the Factory in June 1969.

I would venture to say, that the first digit was misread and is actually a "5". Then, this would all make sense.

Default 149 Serial Number

I'm beyond grateful for all the responses on this subject. Thank you all. I've been trying to clear this up for 8 months. As far as the tag and the number on it, I just went out this morning and read the number again. Seems my old diabetic eyes have done it to me again. The CORRECT number is: 2050047U505970. My deepest apologies to all. Looks like my 149 was built in March of 1974. And just to clear up another matter, the tag I'm referring to is on the left side of the "frame" under the steering console, not on the rear end. I could not find anything on the left side of the rear end at all. That's another thing that has been so confusing to me about the whole I.D. process. Thanks again to all who responded, and again, my deepest apologies.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
