Default K321 Governor/Carb Issues? (IHCC 149)

After using my 149 for around 10 years, I have just finished my first rebuild of a K321. I have built several V-8s but this is my first go at a Kohler. Everything has been replaced, minus the cam. I went through the break-in process...new oil, head torque, tappets and carb adjustments.

The engine runs great at low and high idle. At first the engine would bog under load, then I discovered the governor arm was slipping.

After readjusting the governor arm and setting the high idle stop all appeared to be perfect. I mowed for around 15 minutes and the idle suddenly jumped way higher than I set it and the throttle cable would not slow it down. I have checked the linkages/cables and all appears to be the way I originally set them.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Did you replace the governor with a new one?
If not, you probably need to now!!

Sounds like a Governor issue.

The governor arm might have slipped on the shaft that leads to the governor.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
