The current 2500 series is pretty much a 3000 series without the bells and whistles. Manual lift, no power steering, etc...

And the 3000 series has a more heavy duty transmission than the GT2500 series.

Myself, if I could afford it, the X700 series from JD is hard to beat. But, the Cub 3100 or 3200 would be a lot cheaper to buy so I would lean that way. Plus it still has a metal hood - nothing else out there now does that I know of (except for Ingersoll's tractors).

My question to you is:

why do you think that you need a heavy duty garden tractor (gt3200 or a John Deere x728 series) if you just need it for "cutting an acre and using it as a snowthrower in a urban setting."

Both are more machine than what you require. Save your money man and don't pull any chains.

I guess I figure I wanted a tough tractor to stand up to abuse of years of service

I have a 2135 that has taken some serious abuse over the years. It doesn't look pretty but it still runs. My grandfather bought it new and used it to mow a couple acres, snowblow his driveway, and pull a 19' boat and trailer sideways in his garage on special dolly's every spring and fall.

After he passed it got handed down to my dad and I. I used it to move trailers around the yard, towing garden carts full of dirt, and mowing an acre, 10 plus years later is still in service at my dads house. Outside of that AGS system I would say it would handle what your going to throw at it.

Hey Ricster

From a former CT resident. If you are looking at 2000 series and you want to mow and snow blow you need at least a 2165 or a 2185. Anything less and you will be spending your time & $$$$ replacing the transmissions.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
