Question CUB CADET 1315 Transmission

Story first then I'll get to the nuts and bolts of my issue in the next paragraph. I need a riding mower and I'm too cheap to buy a new one. After weeks of looking I found a steal of a deal for $350 for this mower with a bagger. I drove to pick it up, it started great, ran great, I test drove it and it ran and mowed fine!! So I paid the guy and began loading it in the truck. As I drove it down the first hill to load it I lost the brakes and almost hit my truck, easy fix. First mow I had 2 belts break, but were old and cheap. Then after the first mow I lost high gear and really lost everything but reverse is strong. Now the questions...

I took the transmission to a Peerless DEALER and they couldn't find out the model and/or fix it for me. They didn't charge and gave me a box of parts back. I need the shifter forks, and the drive gear ($90 if the dealer knew which ones to get) So now I turn to the Cadet Pros.

Do I buy a whole new transmission? Is there a cheap alternative? This may not even be the original???

Can anyone identify this one so I can buy parts?

Is this worth the fix or should I cut my loss, engine is strong and mower and deck have no rust at all!

There are two possible choices for the trans in that tractor. Go to cubcadet's main web page, or partstree.com to look up the parts. The diagram tells you where to find the tag to identify your trans. Not many of the internal parts are available anymore. You would probably be money ahead to find a used one. Check with our sponsors at the top of the page, or place an ad in the "wanted" section. Personally, I don't consider these trans-axles worth rebuilding. Good luck!

Oh, and welcome to OCC!

Thanks for the replies and the welcome!

I know where the ID tag "should be" but it was gone when we took it apart. I have the 4-5 parts that the dealer told me I needed to get it going. I will post a pic tomorrow after work of all the pieces. And w/o a doubt I am going to buy them from a member/sponsor of this site because the tractor has been sitting for 2 years now with me not finding solutions

Here are the parts the dealer said I should have replaced, I washed them for good picture quality. When they were looking to order these for the 1315 model, the gear sizes were way off and the shifter forks were way too long. Basically, for someone who understands transmissions, Are these 3 parts a reason for reverse working fine, but 2nd gear on being choppy and skipping.

What is the SN of the 1315? that will tell you which transaxle you have. The small bevel gear is shot. new parts are availible. The peerless tranaxel for the 1315 is near impossible to find in good working on its own. you may need to buy a parts tractor but don't expect a smooth trans in it. better contact Cubcrazy.
I have two 1315's. The peerless transaxle in the 1315 is a different animal. I like them but I know how to operate them. Oh yea, and if you fix your trans, be sure to put bentonite grease in it.

Here is the model number. This is what the dealer used to order the parts when I had them look at it. When the parts came in they were way off, that is why Im thinking this transmission may not belong to the mower

Yeah, the gears are "marred" but not missing teeth that I can see. From the pics, I don't know why they won't work. This is, after all, a lawn mower. You aren't going to be setting speed records with it. If those gears aren't missing teeth, I'd run them. That trans isn't worth much anyway, so if they do go ahead and chip, at the worst, you'll be back where you started.

Looking at the pics again your trans case does not look the same as mine or either case in the service manual. Does the axle have flats on it (D type) where the wheel hub mounts or is it a key shaft? I am thinking this is not the correct trans axle. The bevel gear looks like it was skipping and you may be able to shim it with a thin washer to engage the other gear better but I would replace it if you can find out the part#. Many parts on peerless transaxles interchange with similer models. I would suggest you watch some youtube videos on working on them lots of good info there. and some guys even race them.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
