Default Cub Cadet hydro fluid substitute

I have always purchased Cub Cadet hydro fluid from my local dealer, however when the price went up to nearly $25 a gallon, I decided to check a nearby Case/IH dealer for hydraulic oil. The dealer recommended Mobilfluid 424 as a substitute for the Cub Cadet fluid.

Mobilfluid 424 is a "high performance tractor hydraulic/transmission fluid" that looks, feels and smells nearly identical to the Cub fluid...except for the price. I purchased a 2 1/2 gallon container of Mobilfluid 424 for $25...the same price for ONE gallon of Cub Cadet fluid! I have been using it in my 1864 since restoring it in the spring. Works great in every way!

One question I have is, why Cub Cadet hydraulic fluid is so expensive? Is it synthetic oil? I know Cub Cadet doesn't make their own oil...but they specify what is in their product...which is probably the same product that is sold under many other labels. Is Cub Cadet hydraulic fluid a money maker for the Cub dealerships?

HyTran is a patented product of the Viscosity Oil Co. It was developed solely for Case/IH. When Cub Cadet was still under the IH embrella, it was recommended to use in Cub Cadets. When MTD bought out Cub Cadet, they still use it in the IH Built Cubs. As new CC models were introduced, they used MTD's fluids.

I am sure there are some decent profits in the oil, from Viscosity, Case/IH, and the local dealer.

There is no doubt that HyTran is a very good oil, but at $25.00 a gallon, makes one to take pause.

Default Hydraulic oil

Thanks for the information on the development of the oils that were used in earlier IH/Cub Cadets, Roland...

So, is the Cub Cadet hydraulic oil that the dealers sell "hy-tran"? Also, do you happen to know if the Cub Cadet brand oil is a synthetic version of hy-tran? I'm sure that if it was, that would explain the higher cost. Just wondering?

Just Curious danman, its been 15 days.
did you change your fluid?
you were looking for a step by step tutorial then asked about cross-ref oil and filters
has your 2182 returned to service?

Default Hydraulic oil

Roland, Thank you for the the information on the Case/IH Hy-Tran Ultra hydraulic oil. I'm going to see if my Case/IH dealer has some. If they do, I will change over to the Hy-Tran instead of using the Mobilfluid 424.

I'm thinking that when I purchased the Mobil hydraulic oil, the dealership didn't have the Hy-Tran Ultra, otherwise they probably would have sold that to me instead of the Mobil oil.

2182 still in service . I have the Tsc fluid and napa filter. I need to mow grass one more time before I get to it.

Things are never simple with older equipment. i don’t want to run into issues and have no mower temporarily lol.

Debating if i need to remove that 60” haban mower deck. or if just jacking up the rear end will give enough working room

I understand danman.
if you remove a rear tire it will probably be easy to change the oil and filter. My rears are foam filled, with the 75 pound weights and chains - so its quite a bit of work to get them off. Thats why when I change the filter I have to remove the deck to have room for my oil catch pan and me down there. But since my deck comes of every fall its no real extra work. you may be younger and more flexible than I am. You will need a pretty big pan since there is about 7 quarts in there. I use a much smaller pan for the filter change.
I dont use the mower deck often but I still put it on every year - service the deck(s) in the winter and snow blower in the summer. I switched to ztr cutting about ten years ago the 2182 is just or fun or really hot days I can mow in the shade of the cab with the fan blowing on me, radio on.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
