Default Idling question on diesels

Do you guys leave your diesels idling when your working around the yard or shut them off? Example: I pull the trailer to the dirt pile, load dirt, then drive to the front yard and unload. Leave it idle or shut off in between tasks.

I shut mine off. it gets hot faster at idle. I think thats odd, as my ford PowerStroke cools down at idle.

I left mine run. Run it about 1/3 rd throtal that way it still gets air moving threw the rad.

When I was driving truck Id do the same thing. If I was making a stop out of the truck to just unload then back in, id set the cruse to run the eng about 1000 rpms. It would keep the cab cooler in the summer and also keeps the eng cooler. When they went to putting a 10 min shut off in the ecm, we wold be starting the trucks all the time threw out the day. Then we started going threw starters. and we know how good the starters are on these little diesels.

Ive been watching BRS temp and it will come up a little but still within the normal range. Ive been reading the manuals I have but I havent had time to go completely through them to see what it says. I was always told its easier for a diesel to idle than to start and stop.

Vince, when I drove I did the same thing until the idle change. The BRS starts very easy and runs within normal on temps even at a true idle so I am just curious what you guys are doing. So far 1 vote shut off 1 vote idle LOL

4speed, I am very particular about cleaning the BRS and I clean the radiator and screen every time I use it. Quick blow off with the air compressor or blower when I start and and when I finish. I think this is helping keep my temps in check.

I have a few cousins that work as engineers for the railroad and they have told me before that there are some locomotives that have been running non stop for years rather than start and stop them....

I have been doing a little testing. I have been building an ornamental pond and using the BRS to plow,push and haul the dirt. Ambient air temp has been around +/- 90 degrees. I left the BRS idle during part of the work and it never once got to the top notch on the safe range. Most of the time it stayed just above the first notch. So as far as the BRS goes it will sit an idle without over heating.

I let mine idle. Since I changed the pump and thermostat, the temperature stays steady in all conditions, full throttle, loaded hard, idling. Once it is warmed up it only moves about the width of the needle. If your temperature is going up and down, I would think about changing the thermostat.
