Default Another first time Cub owner

Hello all,

I'm new to the Cub Cadet world - I just brought home a Cub 104 that's in pretty good shape and ready to work - it needs a few things so I'll probably have a number of rookie questions - I'll answer them best I can through lots of archive searches but this site has already been a wealth of info as I've looked at different tractors in my area.

Thanks!
Neil

Thanks!

I was all lined up to get a Cub 100 that was Ok but overpriced by about 100 bucks . . . last night I was cruising CL again and Lo and Behold, this 104 showed up! It was about an hour North of me and I responded to the ad about 45 minutes after he posted it. The fella I bought it from is the son of the original owner who bought it new - it passed from the father to oldest son then down to my guy (the youngest son). He even had the original owners manual, the mower deck manual and the add-on sheet on how to tune up the steering on an older Cub Cadet. The fella I bought it from did a rattle-can restore on it but according to him his dad always stored it inside and it definitely shows as there isn't anything that looks overly worn or weathered.

When I showed up he said: "I sure know what you're here for" . . . "My phone's been ringing off the hook - I've got 3 guys lined up behind you . . . I think I underpriced this thing".

To his credit, he keep his word to me that as first caller I had first shot at it. Real nice fella and when he opened up his garage, there was a brand new Cub Cadet that was replacing the 104.

I'm real excited to have it - I've had the shortest new tractor turn-around with this one - two hours of cleaning then I was out mowing like a mad man.

It needs a few things but they're minor and I'll be fixing it up as it's earning it's keep!

Thanks Methos!

William -
That's one of the things it needs. (another is that the front rubber is two different sizes) I just looked around the forum a bit to see if I could find any pics of that type deck from the L/H side - I'm of the mind that the deck should be closed and that there's an end plate missing - I'm a blacksmith by trade so I'll heat up some sheet and forge a new one for it.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
