1861 starting issues
Ok I may be dumb but it seems like it takes a lot of cranking time to get my 1861 to fire. I replaced the fuel filter in but I killed the battery the last time I tried to start it. I am not sure if the battery does not have enough cca’s left to get it to fire or what the issue is. Can anyone help

Make sure the spark plugs are new and gapped properly. Also verify that the choke is opening and closing. Make sure fuel flow is unobstructed. If it still does not fire, the ignition switch might be faulty, constantly grounding the magneto. To test, disconnect the engine to tractor plug, and see if it will fire.

I had a similar problem with a Kohler M-20. Turned out to be a Fuel Pump.

All good suggestions.
First thing you want to know is if you have a fuel problem or an electrical one. Remove the sparkplugs and inspect for fouling or sever oil contamination as well as general condition, if normal, connect them back to the wires. With the plugs laying on any metal part of the engine, crank it over. If you see spark at the plugs you prolly do not have an electrical problem. While the plugs are out, splash less than an ounce of gasoline in the plug hole, (1/2 tea spoon )then reinstall the plugs and attempt to start. if it quickly tries to start than dies or runs you prolly have a fuel delivery issue. then you need to address that, by removing the hose to the carb and cranking it over, if if pulses a good stream, it is assumed the fuel pump ok. if not see if the line is plugged at the tank exit? before you condem the pump. lets us know what you find. Oh and dumb or ignorant is cured with education. You can't fix stupid |

I have ruled out the electrical but my fear is I may need to replace my battery. But I have a new fuel pump the problem is it is different from the one that is on the tractor currently. It is the circle one and I am not sure which line goes to which port. The tractor has the old metal one with the rubber diaphragm in the middle. I am guessing the part is just worn out. So my question now is which lines go where on the circular pump

Most are marked with an arrow for in and out and a P for the pulse

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
