Default Power steering from 1864 into 782

I have a lead on a power steering setup from a 1864. I wanted to upgrade my 1512 or 782 to power steering. I know it will not be a direct drop in.

Will that setup work?
Anyone done the conversion using this setup?
If so what parts should I be sure to get?

Thanks for your help.

It will work, but your going to have to make your own steering shaft. The 1864 has a tilt column, and the two tractors you talk about have a straight column.

Shaft is a simple job. I get back later with the "How To" BTDT.

I did the same conversion on my 782 a few years back. I had to make a bracket to bolt the PS unit at the bottom to the frame and I adapted a section of shaft to the stub that comes out of the power steering box and spliced a tube from an old manual steering box to extend it. Make sure you get the front axle as well as it will be what is called a super steer axle. It turns much shorter than the 782 axle. If you install the axle you will have adjust the front hangers on your deck to level the deck as the 1864 axle will raise the front of the tractor some. It is a great update to a 782 and makes the tractor a real joy to drive. I have a command 22 hp engine in mine along with a 46 GT deck and I will put it up against any of the new plastic junk that you can buy today. Sorry I do not have any pictures of the shaft conversion but I am sure Sam Mac can help you out with that. Good luck
Tom

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. The conversion from the Cyclops Tilt steering is very simple. I did it with a 1440 box that I put in a 1210. So here's the deal. You need a Woodward C109 DD coupler. Google Woodward Racing Products. This fit's the shaft on the PS box and converts to the upper 3/4" shaft on the Cyclops and eliminates the joint. Then you'll need a section of exhaust tube that you'll have to have a muffler shop expand on end to slip over the tube of the steering box. You cut the upper shaft of the Cyclops to the desired length and the exhaust tube to what ever you need, weld the exhaust tube to the PS box tube and you need to weld the coupler to the upper part of the shaft, then your good to go.

Now all that said based on your PM. If it was me I'd grab the 1864 and find a decent used CH and fix that machine. You'll have PS and the super steer axle. Rather than trying to put PS in a 782. Do as you please, it's your tractor and your wallet.

Or you could make an adapter that looks like this.

Yep, may be a little bit tough trying to steer with the wheel down near the frame. I guess you could eliminate the dash tower.

I'm lazy and wanted to try to keep the wheel about where it belonged and use an off the shelf part.

Just my 2 cents but I wouldn't bother to try to put PS on a 782 at the expense of an 1864. I'd much rather fix/save an 1864 any day. I'll put my Kevlar shorts on now for the flaming hate I'm about to receive.

Yeah I guess, but it worked out fine on my 149.

Ok but you relocated the PS box up under the dash. I think the OP intended to mount it in the OEM location down at the bottom of the frame.

Anyway that is a nice adapter you made, I'm impressed.

Thanks for all suggestions. Hopefully will check out the parts this weekend.

My plan was to put it in the factory location down by the frame. Things around the dash are pretty crowded in the 1512.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
