Default 3240 Buying advice

Hello,

New to the forum but grew up with cub cadet 1000 & 3000 series machines over the years belonging to my dad and grandfather. I found a listing for 3240 with ~500 hours and the 48" mowing deck. As you can see, it looks pretty clean from the pictures. I am going to look at it this week and make an offer if it tests out.

I've talked to a CC dealer and his advice was to make sure the transmission stops when letting off forward and reverse and make sure reverse isn't really slow.

Is there anything else I should be on the lookout for? Also, what would be a fair offer for such a machine in the condition? I'm planning to mow with it primarily but my yard is somewhat hilly so the rear diff lock could come in handy.

Welcome to OCC...........

The 3240 was a commemorative model to celebrate Cub Cadet's 40th Anniversary, in 2001. That alone makes this model attractive to a lot of Cub Cadet Enthusiasts.

As always, condition is a prime factor in determining value.

The slow reverse is a quick fix and is due to slop in the forward reverse linkage due to worn plastic bushings and would not turn me away from a tractor in good condition. A 3240 has a cast iron rear differential and isn't prone to leaks likes the aluminum differentials. 500 hours on a Kohler command has plenty of life left if it was maintained well and one could easily expect over a 1000 hours with regular maintenance. In PA, based on condition a 3240 with 500 hours, would sell in the $1200 to $1500 range. That one looks pretty good based on the pictures.

I bought one about 6 months ago, Paid $1,500 but I wanted a 40 t/h anniversary 3240. Some of these later 3000 series have an adjustment for the mower height. There are some things to do to make sure that the 4 bolts in the differential do not back out. Here is a post on mine,

Love to keep seeing these tractors pop up since reading about them in "50 years of Cub Cadet."

Saw one on marketplace for a few hundred local, and almost bought it for that reason.

In January? Sounds like a premium. I'm not saying it's not worth it, but the market hasn't been supporting that around here.

Don't forget to try to get the hub caps if you buy it. I saw this for sale also and it is about 100 miles from me. I am out of storage room.

I am hoping that the OP lets us know how things went on his offer. He has not been back since the one day he was here. Not much fun.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
