Question BT from upstate NY

just joined but have been perusing the site for a few weeks now since I purchased a 1971 cub cadet model 109. Love it. Has a Kohler K301 engine in it so basically got transformed into a model 129. Runs great just needs some clean up. The mule drive belt is quite worn and has started jumping off the mover deck fly wheel. the belt on the unit is 1/2 inch by 81 inch but what I have found is that it is supposed to be a 3/8 inch by 80 inch belt. Would that be why it is jumping off? Look forward to restoring this tank.

Welcome! Love pictures here BTW.. You stated the belt is worn and possibly wrong belt. That in itself could be the reason its "jumping off" or, Your tension could be wrong or other issues in mule drive. But if you suspect your belt is wrong I would start there. Also, measure your old belt. If its worn it could also have stretched.

The mower deck doesn't have a fly wheel, it has a pulley. Big difference.

You don't say what deck you have but yes, it likely takes the 3/8"X80" belt. Need to know what deck you have to be sure though. An incorrect belt can make it jump off the pulleys, yes. So can incorrect mule drive pulleys, incorrect deck adjustment, bent components, and several other things.

It is 42 inch deck with three blades. No bent components, mule drive pulleys are original and appear to work fine as does the tensioning spring on the one mule drive pulley. Deck does appear to tilt forward somewhat so I am thinking that between the wrong/old belt and the fact the deck is tipped forward a small amount that might be the reason. I will find out this weekend when I can work on it again.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
